Abstract

A system is provided for fasting switching a filter of an imaging system during a scan. In one embodiment, a system comprises a computation device with instructions stored in a non-transient memory to emit an X-ray beam via an X-ray source; move an imaging subject via a motorized table at a nonzero speed; while moving the imaging subject, acquire a dataset of the imaging subject by detecting attenuated X-rays transmitted through the imaging subject via an X-ray detector, wherein a first filter is positioned within the X-ray beam, between the X-ray source and the imaging subject; and while acquiring the dataset, responsive to a change in an anatomy of the imaging subject to be imaged, operate a filter driving system to switch from the first filter to a second filter, wherein during filter switching, the X-ray source does not emit X-rays.

Claims (24)

1 . An imaging system, comprising:

a gantry for receiving an imaging subject;

an X-ray source positioned in the gantry for emitting an X-ray beam;

an X-ray detector positioned in the gantry opposite to the X-ray source for detecting attenuated X-rays;

a filter assembly mounted in the gantry adjacent to an output of the X-ray source, wherein the filter assembly includes:

a first filter driving system including a motor, a first filter and a second filter positioned adjacent the first filter;

a motorized table for moving the imaging subject; and

a computation device with instructions stored in a non-transient memory to:

position the first filter in a path of the X-ray beam;

move the table to move the imaging subject to a first position;

acquire a first portion of an imaging dataset corresponding to a first anatomy of the subject by turning on the X-ray source to emit an X-ray beam;

move the table to move the imaging subject to a second position; and

while moving the table to move the imaging subject to the second position, switch from the first filter to the second filter, wherein switching from the first filter to the second filter includes actuating the motor to switch from the first filter to the second filter in less than two seconds, and wherein during the filter switching, the X-ray source does not emit the X-ray beam;

acquire a second portion of the imaging dataset corresponding to a second anatomy of the subject by turning on the X-ray source to emit an X-ray beam, wherein the second anatomy is different than the first anatomy.

The imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the computation device includes further instructions to determine a contrast enhancement of an injected contrast agent, and start acquiring the first and second portions of the imaging dataset responsive to the contrast enhancement being higher than a nonzero threshold.

3 . The imaging system of claim 1 , wherein actuating the motor to rotate the a shaft translates the first filter out of the X-ray beam, and translates the second filter into the X-ray beam.

4 . The imaging system of claim 3 , wherein the filter driving system further includes a flex coupling positioned between the shaft and the motor.

5 . The imaging system of claim 4 , wherein the filter driving system further includes support bearings positioned between the flex coupling and the shaft.

6 . The imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the first filter is different from the second filter.

7 . The imaging system of claim 1 , further including a second filter driving system including a second motor and a third filter, the third filter arranged on a second shaft.

The imaging system of claim 7 , wherein the computation device further includes instructions to actuate the motor of the first filter driving system to move the first and second filters out of the X-ray beam and to actuate the second motor of the second filter driving system to move the third filter into the path of the X-ray beam.

The imaging system of claim 8 , wherein the computation device further includes instructions to acquire a third portion of the imaging dataset corresponding to a third anatomy of the subject by turning on the X-ray source to emit an X-ray beam, wherein the third anatomy is different than the first anatomy and the second anatomy.

10 . The imaging system of claim 8 , wherein actuating the second motor rotates the second shaft to translate the third filter relative to the X-ray beam.

11 . The imaging system of claim 1 , wherein the computation device further includes instructions to select one of the first filter or the second filter based on the anatomy of being imaged identified by a scanning protocol.
