Abstract

A method for processing virtualization of computers that are part of a group into virtual computers is provided. The method includes obtaining relationship data from the computers, where the relationship data identifies parameters used to communicate within the group. Then, the method analyzes utilization parameters for each of the computers of the group. A visual model for proposed virtualization of the group of computers is then generated. The visual model identifies hosting machines designated to define a virtual computer for each of the computers, where the visual model provides a graphical illustration of the group of computers once converted to virtual computers. The method enables adjustment of the proposed virtualization of the group of computers. Then, an execution sequence of virtualization operations to be carried out is generated, if execution of the proposed virtualization is triggered, and the execution sequence is saved to storage and accessed upon execution.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request to convert a plurality of physical machines into virtual computers on a host;

accessing relationship data that defines relationships between each of the plurality of physical machines; and

converting the plurality of physical machines into the virtual computers by executing a sequence of virtualization operations that maintain the defined relationships.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising accessing the virtualization operations that, when executed, maintain the defined relationships.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein accessing virtualization operations comprises accessing a script that defines an execution sequence of the virtualization operations.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the script includes a defined order in which the execution sequence of virtualization operations is to be executed such that the defined relationships between the plurality of physical computers are maintained.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, from a user, a request to adjust the defined relationships; and

prior to the converting, adjusting the defined relationships according to the request, wherein executing the sequence of virtualization operations maintains the adjusted defined relationships.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising;

presenting the user with the defined relationships in a user interface; and

enabling the user to adjust the define relationships within the user interface.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing relationship data for the plurality of physical computers with relationship data for the virtual computers; and

adjusting parameters of the virtual computers based on the comparing.

8. A system comprising:

a processor programmed to:

receive a request to convert a plurality of physical machines into virtual computers on a host;

access relationship data that defines relationships between each of the plurality of physical machines; and

convert the plurality of physical machines into the virtual computers by executing a sequence of virtualization operations that maintain the defined relationships.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further programmed to access the virtualization operations that, when executed, maintain the defined relationships.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein accessing virtualization operations comprises accessing a script that defines an execution sequence of the virtualization operations.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the script includes a defined order in which the execution sequence of virtualization operations is to be executed such that the defined relationships between the plurality of physical computers are maintained.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:

receive, from a user, a request to adjust the defined relationships; and

prior to the converting, adjust the defined relationships according to the request, wherein executing the sequence of virtualization operations maintains the adjusted defined relationships.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:

present the user with the defined relationships in a user interface; and

enable the user to adjust the define relationships within the user interface.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further programmed to:

compare relationship data for the plurality of physical computers with relationship data for the virtual computers; and

adjust parameters of the virtual computers based on the comparing.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

receive a request to convert a plurality of physical machines into virtual computers on a host;

access relationship data that defines relationships between each of the plurality of physical machines; and

convert the plurality of physical machines into the virtual computers by executing a sequence of virtualization operations that maintain the defined relationships.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further cause the processor to access the virtualization operations that, when executed, maintain the defined relationships.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein accessing virtualization operations comprises accessing a script that defines an execution sequence of the virtualization operations.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the script includes a defined order in which the execution sequence of virtualization operations is to be executed such that the defined relationships between the plurality of physical computers are maintained.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium claim 18 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further cause the processor to:

receive, from a user, a request to adjust the defined relationships; and

prior to the converting, adjust the defined relationships according to the request, wherein executing the sequence of virtualization operations maintains the adjusted defined relationships.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further cause the processor to:

present the user with the defined relationships in a user interface; and

enable the user to adjust the define relationships within the user interface.
