Abstract

A light detection and ranging system can have a light source coupled to a polygon reflector having a plurality of facets. A controller can be connected to the light source and directed to generate and execute a calibration strategy that alters an orientation of the light source in response to identification of a position of at least one facet of the plurality of facets.

Claims (28)

1 . An apparatus comprising a light source coupled to a reflector having a plurality of facets, a controller connected to the light source and directed to map at least one of the plurality of facets.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is connected to a segmented detector as part of a light detection and ranging system.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the reflector is a non-symmetric polygon.

4 . A method comprising:

coupling a light source to a reflector having a plurality of facets;

directing light energy to the reflector, as directed by a controller; and

mapping at least one facet of the reflector in response to the light energy reflected by the reflector.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the mapping identifies a number of facets in the plurality of facets.

6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the mapping identifies a shape of at least one of the plurality of facets.

7 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the mapping identifies a reflectivity of at least one of the plurality of facets.

8 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the mapping identifies a location of each of the plurality of facets one the reflector.

9 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the mapping involves emitting a test pattern towards the reflector, the test pattern generated by the controller.

10 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the controller assigns a reflection signature to at least one facet of the reflector.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the controller designates at least one facet of the plurality of facets is ignored as a result of a low reflection signature

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the controller designates at least one corrective action to increase a low reflection signature for at least one facet of the plurality of facets.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the controller maps less than all of the plurality of facets present on the reflector.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the controller prioritizes a selected facet of the plurality of facets in response to a high reflection signature.

15 . A method comprising:

coupling a light source to a reflector having a plurality of facets;

directing light energy to the reflector, as directed by a controller;

calibrating, with the controller, the reflector to accurately identify a downrange target; and

bouncing light energy off the reflector; and

sensing, with a detector connected to the controller, a downrange target.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the calibration involves a varying pulse width from the light source to the reflector.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the calibration involves physically covering a corner of the reflector with non-reflective material.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the calibration involves varying a speed of rotation of the reflector over time.

19 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the calibration involves changing a position of the light source relative to the reflector.

20 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the calibration detects and ignores inadvertent reflections from the reflector.
