Abstract

Examples are disclosed for a navigation system that facilitates navigation through hierarchically-related views within a user interface using multiple independent entry points. In one example, a system is configured to generate a user interface that includes a hierarchy of views based on navigation data and display a plurality of navigation components in the user interface. A selection of a navigation entry is received that corresponds to a desired view from one of the navigation components. A request is sent to a remote navigation service for data associated with the navigation entry of the desired view. The navigation components are updated based on updated navigation data received from the remote navigation service. An updated user interface is displayed that includes a dynamically generated view for the navigation entry based on the updated structure of the hierarchy of views in the plurality of navigation components.

Claims (59)

1. A system, comprising:

a computing device comprising memory;

an application executable by the computing device, wherein, when executed, the application causes the computing device to at least:

generate a user interface that includes a hierarchy of views based on navigation data;

display a plurality of navigation components in the user interface, each of the plurality of navigation components individually providing an entry point for navigation of the hierarchy of views;

receive a selection of a navigation entry that corresponds to a desired view from one of the plurality of navigation components;

send a request to a remote navigation service for data associated with the navigation entry of the desired view;

update the plurality of navigation components based on updated navigation data received from the remote navigation service, the hierarchy of views being adjusted based on the updated navigation data having an updated structure of the hierarchy of views; and

display an updated user interface that includes a dynamically generated view for the navigation entry based on the updated structure of the hierarchy of views in the plurality of navigation components.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein when executed, the application further causes the computing device to at least determine that the desired view is invalid.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein when executed, the application further causes the computing device to at least update the user interface to display a home view of the hierarchy of views in an instance in which the desired view is invalid, wherein the home view is static.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein when executed, the application further causes the computing device to at least:

send a navigation data request to the remote navigation service in response to determining the desired view is invalid; and

receive the updated navigation data from the remote navigation service.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the navigation entry comprises at least one of a button, a link, or a dropdown box.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein updating the plurality of navigation components further causes the computing device to:

generate an updated hierarchy of views by identifying the updated structure in the updated navigation data, the updated structure comprising a change in at least one of a plurality of relationships between a plurality of navigation endpoints from a previous instance associated with the hierarchy of views; and

rebuild the plurality of navigation components based on the updated hierarchy of views.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of navigation components comprise an active state and a non-active state;

during the active state, the plurality of navigation components display an entire hierarchal structure of available navigation entries corresponding to the hierarchy of views, and

during the non-active state, the plurality of navigation components display a reference to the last activated view.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying executable instructions, which, when executed by a processor, cause a computing device to at least:

generate a user interface that includes a hierarchy of views based on navigation data;

display a plurality of navigation components in the user interface, each of the plurality of navigation components individually providing an entry point for navigation of the hierarchy of views;

receive a selection of a navigation entry that corresponds to a desired view from one of the plurality of navigation components;

send a request to a remote navigation service for data associated with the navigation entry of the desired view;

update the plurality of navigation components based on updated navigation data received from the remote navigation service, the hierarchy of views being adjusted based on the updated navigation data having an updated structure of the hierarchy of views; and

display an updated user interface that includes a dynamically generated view for the navigation entry based on the updated structure of the hierarchy of views in the plurality of navigation components.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein, when executed, the executable instructions further cause the computing device to at least determine that the desired view is invalid.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein when executed, the instructions further cause the computing device to at least update the user interface to display a home view of the hierarchy of views in an instance in which the desired view is invalid, wherein the home view is static.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein when executed, the instructions further cause the computing device to at least:

send a navigation data request to the remote navigation service in response to determining the desired view is invalid; and

receive the updated navigation data from the remote navigation service, the updated navigation data comprising a change in a relationship between the hierarchy of views.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the navigation entry comprises at least one of a button, a link, or a dropdown box.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein updating the plurality of navigation components further causes the computing device to:

generate an updated hierarchy of views by identifying the updated structure in the updated navigation data, the updated structure comprising a plurality of relationships between a plurality of navigation endpoints; and

rebuild the plurality of navigation components based on the updated hierarchy of views.

14. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

generating a user interface that includes a hierarchy of views based on navigation data;

displaying a plurality of navigation components in the user interface, each of the plurality of navigation components individually providing an entry point for navigation of the hierarchy of views;

receiving a selection of a navigation entry that corresponds to a desired view from one of the plurality of navigation components;

sending a request to a remote navigation service for data associated with the navigation entry of the desired view;

updating the plurality of navigation components based on updated navigation data received from the remote navigation service, the hierarchy of views being adjusted based on the updated navigation data having an updated structure of the hierarchy of views; and

displaying an updated user interface that includes a dynamically generated view for the navigation entry based on the updated structure of the hierarchy of views in the plurality of navigation components.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , further comprising determining that the desired view is invalid.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , further comprising:

updating the user interface to display a home view of the hierarchy of views in an instance in which the desired view is invalid, wherein the home view is static.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , further comprising:

sending a navigation data request to the remote navigation service in response to determining the desired view is invalid; and

receiving the updated navigation data from the remote navigation service.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein the navigation entry comprises at least one of a button, a link, or a dropdown box.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein updating the plurality of navigation components further comprising:

generating an updated hierarchy of views by identifying the updated structure in the updated navigation data, the updated structure comprising a plurality of relationships between a plurality of navigation endpoints; and

rebuilding the plurality of navigation components based on the updated hierarchy of views.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 14 , wherein:

the plurality of navigation components comprise an active state and a non-active state;

during the active state, the plurality of navigation components display an entire hierarchal structure of available navigation entries corresponding to the hierarchy of views, and

during the non-active state, the plurality of navigation components display a reference to the last activated view.
