Abstract

A golf club head including a striking face, a periphery portion surrounding and extending rearwards from the striking face, wherein the striking face comprises a front surface configured to strike a golf ball and a rear surface opposite the front surface, a support arm spaced from the rear surface of the striking face, the support arm extending from the periphery portion, wherein the support arm extends from the sole to the topline, a first damping element residing between the support arm and the rear surface of the striking face, a second damping element located between the support arm and the striking face, the second damping element in contact with the rear surface of the striking face and the support arm, and wherein the second damping element wraps around the support arm.

Claims (53)

1 . A golf club head, comprising:

a striking face having a bottom edge, a top edge opposite to the bottom edge, a front surface configured to strike a golf ball, and a rear surface opposite to the front surface;

a sole extending rearward from the bottom edge of the striking face;

a crown extending rearward from the top edge of the striking face and joined to the sole along a skirt of the golf club head;

a cavity at least partially enclosed by the striking face, the sole, and the crown, the cavity being entirely sealed off from outside of the golf club head;

a hosel disposed at a heel and comprising:

an external upper hosel portion that protrudes outwardly from the golf club head and has a first opening shaped and sized to receive at least part of a golf club shaft into the cavity, and

an internal lower hosel portion that protrudes into the cavity and has a second opening that is aligned with the first opening and shaped and sized to receive at least part of the golf club shaft;

a support arm extending at least partially through the cavity from the internal lower hosel portion, and spaced apart from the striking face; and

an elastomer element positioned between the support arm and the rear surface of the striking face, the elastomer element covering, and directly contacting, a center of the striking face; and

an adjustment mechanism entirely within the cavity and configured to adjust a compression of the elastomer element against the rear surface of the striking face,

wherein the support arm comprises a base arm member and a flat support member that is attached to the base arm member, positioned between the elastomer element and the base arm member, and is spaced apart from the crown and the hosel, the base arm member and the flat support member both being entirely within the cavity.

2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises an adjustable driver.

3 . The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the support arm has an aperture hole shaped and sized to receive at least part of the adjustable driver.

4 . The golf club head of claim 2 , further comprising a compression plate between the elastomer element and the support arm, wherein the adjustment driver is selectively positionable to apply a controllable force to the compression plate.

5 . The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein the flat support member has an aperture hole shaped and sized to receive at least part of the adjustable driver, the aperture hole being separated from the base arm member.

6 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the striking face is less than 3.0 mm.

7 . A golf club head, comprising:

a heel;

a toe;

a striking face coupled between the heel and the toe, and having a front surface configured to strike a golf ball, and a rear surface opposite to the front surface;

a sole extending rearward from the striking face;

a crown extending rearward from the striking face and joined to the sole along a skirt of the golf club head;

a cavity at least partially enclosed by the striking face, the sole, and the crown;

a hosel disposed at the heel and comprising:

an external upper hosel portion that protrudes outwardly from the golf club head and has a first opening shaped and sized to receive at least part of a golf club shaft into the cavity, and

an internal lower hosel portion that protrudes into the cavity and has a second opening that is aligned with the first opening and shaped and sized to receive at least part of the golf club shaft;

a support arm extending at least partially through the cavity from the internal lower hosel portion, and spaced apart from the striking face, wherein a longitudinal axis of the support arm extends from the internal lower hosel portion towards the toe; and

a damping element positioned between the support arm and the rear surface of the striking face.

8 . The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein the support arm is cantilevered in the cavity.

9 . The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein a front surface of the damping element is in contact with the rear surface of the striking face and has a circular shape.

10 . The golf club head of claim 7 , further comprising a compression plate between the damping element and the support arm.

11 . The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein the compression plate comprises titanium.

12 . The golf club head of claim 10 , wherein the support arm comprises a base arm member and a flat support member attached to the base arm member and positioned between the compression plate and the base arm member, and

wherein the golf club head further comprises an adhesive between the flat support member and the compression plate to secure the flat support member to the compression plate.

13 . The golf club head of claim 7 , wherein a thickness of the striking face is within a range of 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm.

14 . A golf club head, comprising:

a heel;

a toe;

a striking face coupled between the heel and the toe, and having a front surface configured to strike a golf ball and a rear surface opposite to the front surface;

a sole extending rearward from the striking face;

a crown coupled between the striking face and the sole;

a cavity at least partially enclosed by the striking face, the sole, and the crown;

a hosel disposed at the heel and comprising:

an external upper hosel portion that protrudes outwardly from the golf club head and has a first opening shaped and sized to receive at least part of a golf club shaft into the cavity, and

an internal lower hosel portion that protrudes into the cavity and has a second opening that is aligned with the first opening and shaped and sized to receive at least part of the golf club shaft;

a support arm extending at least partially through the cavity from the internal lower hosel portion, wherein a longitudinal axis of the support arm extends from the internal lower hosel portion towards the toe;

a damping element positioned between the support arm and the rear surface of the striking face; and

an adjustable driver moveable along a driver axis and configured to adjust compression of the damping element against the rear surface of the striking face, the driver axis and the longitudinal axis of the support arm being oriented along different directions.

15 . The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein a thickness of the striking face is less than 3.0 mm.

16 . The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein the damping element comprises a polymer.

17 . The golf club head of claim 14 , wherein the golf club head comprises a body comprising the toe, the heel, the striking face, the sole, the crown, and the hosel, and having a third opening shaped and sized to at least partially receive a tool configured to adjust the adjustable driver.
