Abstract

A temporal sequence of pictures is generated in a method for encoding of a first video stream. To do so, a synchronization signal can be used, which can be derived from a second video stream independently of the first video stream. Alternatively, the encoding of a second video stream independent of the first video stream can be based on the same principle as for the encoding of the first video stream.

Claims (32)

1. A computer-implemented method for synchronizing a video conference, the method comprising:

receiving, by a mixing device, a first temporal sequence of frames of a first video stream from a first terminal;

identifying a predictive structure for encoding the first video stream;

deriving, by the mixing device, a synchronization signal using the first temporal sequence of frames and the predictive structure; and

sending, by the mixing device, the synchronization signal to a second terminal, so that subsequent frames of the first temporal sequence and subsequent frames of a second temporal sequence from the second terminal sent to the mixing device are synchronized with each other via synchronized encoding of the first and second subsequent frames by encoders of the first and second terminals.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first temporal sequence of frames comprises first non-prediction-encoded frames and first prediction-encoded frames.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes shortening of a picture group length of the second video stream.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes reducing a number of pictures of the second video stream to generate a time offset.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a time offset between the positions of I-frames within the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a number of P-frames or number of B-frames to follow an I-frame in the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the prediction structure is signaled to a third terminal associated with a new participant of the video conference during an establishment of a connection of the third terminal to the video conference.

8. A conference system comprising:

a mixing device having non-transitory memory and associated with at least one processor configured to:

receive a first temporal sequence of frames of a first video stream from a first terminal;

derive a synchronization signal using the first temporal sequence of frames and a predictive structure selected based on the first video stream; and

send the synchronization signal to a second terminal, so that subsequent frames of the first temporal sequence and subsequent frames of a second temporal sequence from the second terminal sent to the mixing device are synchronized with each other via synchronized encoding of the first and second subsequent frames by encoders of the first and second terminals.

9. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein the first temporal sequence of frames comprises first non-prediction-encoded frames and first prediction-encoded frames.

10. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes shortening of a picture group length of the second video stream.

11. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes reducing a number of pictures of the second video stream to generate a time offset.

12. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a time offset between the positions of I-frames within the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

13. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a number of P-frames or number of B-frames to follow an I-frame in the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

14. The conference system of claim 8 , wherein the prediction structure is signaled to a third terminal associated with a new participant of the video conference during an establishment of a connection of the third terminal to the video conference.

15. A non-transitory, computer-readable medium for synchronizing a video conference, the computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor associated with a mixing device, cause the at least one processor to perform the steps of:

receiving a first temporal sequence of frames of a first video stream from a first terminal;

identifying a predictive structure for encoding the first video stream;

deriving a synchronization signal using the first temporal sequence of frames and the predictive structure; and

sending the synchronization signal to a second terminal, so that subsequent frames of the first temporal sequence and subsequent frames of a second temporal sequence from the second terminal sent to the mixing device are synchronized with each other via synchronized encoding of the first and second subsequent frames by encoders of the first and second terminals.

16. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes shortening of a picture group length of the second video stream.

17. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein sending the synchronization signal causes reducing a number of pictures of the second video stream to generate a time offset.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a time offset between the positions of I-frames within the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

19. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the synchronization signal contains an information item identifying a number of P-frames or number of B-frames to follow an I-frame in the subsequent frames of the second temporal sequence sent to the mixing device.

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the prediction structure is signaled to a third terminal associated with a new participant of the video conference during an establishment of a connection of the third terminal to the video conference.
