Golf ball having non-planar parting line
The present invention is directed to a golf ball having a non-planar parting line on its spherical surface. The non-planar parting line includes a plurality of arcuate segments, including at least one elliptical arc segment.
1. A golf ball having a non-planar parting line and comprising a plurality of dimples located adjacent to the non-planar parting line, wherein the non-planar parting line comprises a plurality of arcuate segments including at least one elliptical arc segment, the elliptical arc segment being defined by a portion of an ellipse and concentric with an adjacent dimple, wherein the ellipse has a major axis, a minor axis, and two vertex points defined as the two points where the ellipse and the major axis intersect, and wherein the ellipse has a constant eccentricity, e, defined as:

where a is the length of the major axis of the ellipse and b is the length of the minor axis of the ellipse.
2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the length b of the minor axis of the ellipse that defines the elliptical arc segment is equal to half the average dimple diameter of the adjacent dimple with which the elliptical arc segment is concentric.
3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the length b of the minor axis of the ellipse that defines the elliptical arc segment is greater than half the average dimple diameter of the adjacent dimple with which the elliptical arc is concentric.
4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the length b of the minor axis of the ellipse that defines the elliptical arc segment is less than half the average dimple diameter of the adjacent dimple with which the elliptical arc is concentric.
5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein one of the two vertex points of the ellipse that defines the elliptical arc segment is positioned on the equator of the ball.
6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the elliptical arc segment is connected to an adjacent arcuate segment with a straight line segment, the straight line segment maintaining a tangency with the elliptical arc segment and a tangency with the adjacent arcuate segment.
7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the elliptical arc segment is connected at an end to an adjacent arcuate segment and maintains tangency with the adjacent arcuate segment.
