Abstract

A method and a communication network are disclosed. The method comprises determining, by a first computing device of a trusted computing system, a type of transaction being performed at the first computing device, responsive to said determining, transmitting, by the first computing device, an authentication request, for authenticating an identity of an individual at the first computing device, to a server of the trusted computing system, wherein the authentication request comprises data indicative of a minimum required authentication provider score for the type of transaction and/or data indicative of at least one required authentication provider attribute for the type of transaction, identifying a selected authentication provider module that meets the minimum required authentication provider score and/or that has the at least one required authentication provider attribute, and selecting the selected authentication provider module to fulfil the authentication request and thereby authenticate the identity of the individual.

Claims (56)

1 . A computer-implemented method for selecting an authentication provider module for authenticating an identity of an individual, the method comprising:

determining, by a first computing device of a trusted computing system, a type of transaction being performed at the first computing device;

responsive to said determining, transmitting, by the first computing device to a server of the trusted computing system, an authentication request, for authenticating an identity of an individual at the first computing device, wherein the authentication request comprises at least one of: i) data indicative of a minimum required authentication provider score for the type of transaction or ii) data indicative of at least one required authentication provider attribute for the type of transaction;

identifying an authentication provider module that at least one of: i) meets the minimum required authentication provider score or ii) has the at least one required authentication provider attribute; and

selecting the identified authentication provider module to fulfil the authentication request and thereby authenticate the identity of the individual.

2 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to said selecting, authenticating, by the selected authentication provider module, the identity of the individual.

3 . The method as claimed in claim 2 , further comprising:

responsive to said authenticating, transmitting, by the selected authentication provider module, a response to the authentication request to the server.

4 . The method as claimed in claim 3 , further comprising:

verifying, by the server, that the selected authentication provider module meets the minimum required authentication provider score and/or that has the at least one required authentication provider attribute.

5 . The method as claimed in claim 4 , further comprising:

verifying by analysing an authentication token transmitted with the response, the token comprising data indicative of a trust level score of the selected authentication provider module and data indicative of at least one attribute of the authentication provider module.

6 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to transmitting the authentication request to the server, providing the authentication request to an authentication request queue on the server.

7 . The method as claimed in claim 6 , wherein identifying comprises:

monitoring, by at least one authentication provider module, the authentication request queue; and

determining one authentication provider module of the at least one authentication provider module that meets the minimum required authentication provider score and/or that has the at least one required authentication provider attribute.

8 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying that the selected authentication provider module meets the minimum required authentication provider score when a trust level score of the selected authentication provider module is equal to or greater than the minimum required authentication provider score.

9 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the minimum required authentication provider score and/or the at least one required authentication provider attribute based on the type of transaction.

10 . The method as claimed in claim 9 , further comprising:

providing the minimum required authentication provider score and/or the at least one required authentication provider attribute based on the type of transaction and a type of the first computing device.

11 . The method as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the type of the first computing device is one of: an Automated Telle Machine or a desktop computer, laptop or mobile device operated by a bank teller.

12 . The method as claimed in claim 9 , further comprising:

automatically determining the minimum required authentication score by the first computing device or manually determining the minimum required authentication score.

13 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

determining the type of transaction as one of:

a cash withdrawal below a predetermined threshold;

a cash withdrawal above the predetermined threshold;

opening a new bank account; or

closing an existing bank account.

14 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to determining the transaction type, transmitting, by the first computing device, an initial authentication request to the server, wherein the initial authentication request comprises data indicative of an initial minimum required authentication provider score that is less that said minimum required authentication provider score for the type of transaction; and

responsive to receiving a response, at the first computing device, to the initial authentication request, receiving at least one input on the first computing device to thereby determine the type of transaction.

15 . The method as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising:

providing the authentication provider score for the initial authentication request based on a type of the first computing device.

16 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to transmitting the authentication request, generating, by the first computing device, the authentication request.

17 . The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a trust level score for the selected authentication provider module based on at least one attribute of the selected authentication provider module.

18 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , further comprising:

providing the trust level score based on a subset of at least one attribute of said at least one attribute.

19 . The method as claimed in claim 18 , further comprising providing the trust level score by:

providing a respective weighting for each attribute of the subset; and

providing the trust level score as a summation of each respective weighting.

20 . A communication network, comprising:

a trusted computing system comprising a first computing device and a server;

a non-trusted computing system comprising at least one authentication provider module configured to authenticate an identity of an individual independently of the trusted computing system;

wherein the first computing device is configured to:

determine a type of transaction being performed at the first computing device; and

transmit an authentication request to the server, for authenticating an identity of an individual at the first computing device, wherein the authentication request comprises at least one of: i) data indicative of a minimum required authentication provider score for the type of transaction or ii) data indicative of at least one required authentication provider attribute for the type of transaction;

wherein the non-trusted computing system is configured to:

identify an authentication provider module, of the at least authentication provider module, that at least one of: i) meets the minimum required authentication provider score or ii) has the at least one required authentication provider attribute; and

select the identified authentication provider module to fulfil the authentication request and thereby authenticate the identity of the individual.
