Abstract

Magnetic coupling devices are disclosed which may be configured in at least three states. The various states may be provided through one or more of altering a position of a permanent magnet relative to another permanent magnet and altering a current level in a coil surrounding a permanent magnet.

Claims (25)

1. A magnetic coupling device for magnetically coupling to a ferromagnetic workpiece positioned on a support, comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of workpiece contact interfaces supported by the housing and adapted to contact the ferromagnetic workpiece;

a magnetic flux source including

a plurality of permanent magnets supported by the housing and including a first permanent magnet and a second permanent magnet, and

a coil of wire wrapped around the second permanent magnet of the plurality of permanent magnets; and

an electronic controller operatively coupled to the coil of wire of the magnetic flux source to control a current through the coil of wire, the electronic controller including logic which results in a plurality of states of the magnetic flux source each having a respective level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces, the plurality of states of the magnetic flux source including:

(a) a first state wherein the magnetic flux source has a first configuration including a first level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces, the first level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces being insufficient to lift the ferromagnetic workpiece relative to the support;

(b) a second state wherein the magnetic flux source has a second configuration including a second level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces, the second level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces being sufficient to lift the ferromagnetic workpiece relative to the support, the second level of magnetic flux being greater than the first level of magnetic flux; and

(c) a third state wherein the magnetic flux source has a third configuration including a third level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces, the third level of magnetic flux being greater than each of the first level of magnetic flux and the second level of magnetic flux, wherein in the first state a north pole of the second permanent magnet is magnetically adjacent a south pole of the first permanent magnet and a south pole of the second permanent magnet is magnetically adjacent a north pole of the first permanent magnet and in both the second state and the third state the north pole of the second permanent magnet is magnetically adjacent the north pole of the first permanent magnet and the south pole of the second permanent magnet is magnetically adjacent the south pole of the first permanent magnet.

2. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the second permanent magnet is movable relative to the first permanent magnet.

3. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the second permanent magnet is rotatable relative to the first permanent magnet.

4. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic controller controls the current through the coil of wire to alter a level of magnetic flux contributed by the second permanent magnet to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the workpiece contact interfaces.

5. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein each of the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet are positioned between a first workpiece contact interface of the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces and a second workpiece contact interface of the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces.

6. The magnetic coupling device of claim 5 , wherein the second permanent magnet is positioned vertically above the first permanent magnet.

7. The magnetic coupling device of claim 5 , wherein each of the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet are positioned vertically above the first workpiece contact interface of the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces and the second workpiece contact interface of the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces.

8. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the coil of wire is wrapped around both the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet.

9. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , further comprises a sensing system supported by the housing, the sensing system including at least one sensor which monitors a level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces.

10. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , further comprises a sensing system supported by the housing, the electronic controller based on the sensing system determines a proximity of the magnetic coupling device to the ferromagnetic workpiece.

11. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein in the first state of the plurality of states up to 4% percent of the magnetic flux produced by the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet is available at the plurality of workplace contact interfaces.

12. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein in the first state of the plurality of states up to 1% percent of the magnetic flux produced by the first permanent magnet and the second permanent magnet is available at the plurality of workplace contact interfaces.

13. The magnetic coupling device of claim 5 , further comprising a first pole shoe coupled to the housing and a second pole shoe coupled to the housing, the first pole shoe including the first workpiece contact interface and the second pole shoe including the second workpiece contact interface.

14. The magnetic coupling device of claim 1 , wherein the first permanent magnet is a high coercivity magnet and the second permanent magnet is a low coercivity magnet.

15. The magnetic coupling device of claim 14 , further comprises a sensing system supported by the housing, the sensing system including at least one sensor which monitors a level of magnetic flux available to the ferromagnetic workpiece at the plurality of workpiece contact interfaces.

16. The magnetic coupling device of claim 14 , further comprises a sensing system supported by the housing, the electronic controller based on the sensing system determines a proximity of the magnetic coupling device to the ferromagnetic workpiece.
