Abstract

Example techniques relate to re-establishing connectivity of playback devices. In an example implementation, a first playback device determines that a first access point has been replaced with a second access point, wherein the first playback device previously established a valid network connection over the first WLAN using first network parameters. The first playback device connects to the second access point, the second access point providing a second WLAN. The first playback device requests, via the wireless network interface from the second access point, an IP address in a second subnet, the second subnet covering a different range of IP addresses than the first subnet and establishes a network connection over the second WLAN using second network parameters stored in the data storage of the first playback device.

Claims (63)

1. A playback device comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one audio amplifier;

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium; and

program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

establish a first connection to a first secure wireless network via a first access point (AP) using a first (Internet Protocol) IP address;

monitor, for changes to the first connection, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) frames transmitted over the first secure wireless network by playback devices of a media playback system that includes the playback device;

based on monitoring the DHCP frames, detect a change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP;

based on the change, determine that the playback device is to obtain a second IP address for connecting to a second secure wireless network;

obtain, from a second AP, a second IP address for connecting to the second secure wireless network;

establish a second connection to the second secure wireless network via the second AP using the second IP address; and

after receipt of audio content via the second secure wireless network, play back the audio content using the at least one audio amplifier.

2. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein:

the first AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a first set of IP addresses;

the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to detect the change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

determine that the first AP has been replaced by the second AP; and

the second AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.

3. The playback device of claim 2 , wherein the first IP address comprises an IP address within the first set of IP addresses, and wherein the second IP address comprises an IP address within the second set of IP addresses.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the first AP is the second AP and the first secure wireless network is the second secure wireless network, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to detect the change in the first connection to the secure wireless network via the first AP comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

determine that the first AP has been reconfigured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.

5. The playback device of claim 4 , wherein the first IP address comprises an IP address within the first set of IP addresses, and wherein the second IP address comprises an IP address within the second set of IP addresses.

The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the second AP comprises a DHCP server, and wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to obtain a second IP address comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

transmit, to the DHCP server, an IP address lease request for a second IP address.

7. The playback device of claim 6 , wherein the lease request comprises a DHCP_REQUEST packet.

8. The playback device of claim 7 , wherein the DHCP_REQUEST packet identifies the second IP address.

9. The playback device of claim 6 , further comprising program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the playback device is configured to:

before transmitting the IP address lease request to the DHCP server, (i) broadcast a DHCP_DISCOVER packet and (ii) receive, from the DHCP server, a DHCP_OFFER packet; and

receive, from the DHCP server, a DHCP acknowledgement comprising the second IP address.

10. The playback device of claim 1 , wherein the playback device is a first playback device, wherein the first AP comprises a router, and wherein the second AP comprises a second playback device.

11. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a playback device to:

establish a first connection to a first secure wireless network via a first access point (AP) using a first (Internet Protocol) IP address;

monitor, for changes to the first connection, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) frames transmitted over the first secure wireless network by playback devices of a media playback system that includes the playback device;

based on monitoring the DHCP frames, detect a change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP;

based on the change, determine that the playback device is to obtain a second IP address for connecting to a second secure wireless network;

obtain, from a second AP, a second IP address for connecting to the second secure wireless network;

establish a second connection to the second secure wireless network via the second AP using the second IP address; and

after receipt of audio content via the second secure wireless network, play back the audio content using the at least one audio amplifier.

12. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein:

the first AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a first set of IP addresses;

the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to detect the change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to:

determine that the first AP has been replaced by the second AP; and

the second AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.

13. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the first IP address comprises an IP address within the first set of IP addresses, and wherein the second IP address comprises an IP address within the second set of IP addresses.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the first AP is the second AP and the first secure wireless network is the second secure wireless network, and wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to detect the change in the first connection to the secure wireless network via the first AP comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to:

determine that the first AP has been reconfigured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.

15. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the first IP address comprises an IP address within the first set of IP addresses, and wherein the second IP address comprises an IP address within the second set of IP addresses.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the second AP comprises a DHCP server, and wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to obtain the second IP address comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the playback device to:

transmit, to the DHCP server, an IP address lease request for the second IP address.

17. A method carried out by a playback device, the method comprising:

establishing a first connection to a first secure wireless network via a first access point (AP) using a first (Internet Protocol) IP address;

monitor, for changes to the first connection, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) frames transmitted over the first secure wireless network by playback devices of a media playback system that includes the playback device;

based on monitoring the DHCP frames, detecting a change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP;

based on the change, determining that the playback device is to obtain a second IP address for connecting to a second secure wireless network;

obtaining, from a second AP, a second IP address for connecting to the second secure wireless network;

establishing a second connection to the second secure wireless network via the second AP using the second IP address; and

after receipt of audio content via the second secure wireless network, playing back the audio content using at least one audio amplifier of the playback device.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein:

the first AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a first set of IP addresses;

detecting the change in the first connection to the first secure wireless network via the first AP comprises determining that the first AP has been replaced by the second AP; and

the second AP is configured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the first IP address comprises an IP address within the first set of IP addresses, and wherein the second IP address comprises an IP address within the second set of IP addresses.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first AP is the second AP and the first secure wireless network is the second secure wireless network, and wherein detecting the change in the first connection to the secure wireless network via the first AP comprises:

determining that the first AP has been reconfigured to provide IP addresses within a second set of IP addresses that is different from the first set of IP addresses.
