Abstract

Methods and systems for configuring and rendering a fluorescent watermark can involve modifying a non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink from an original ultraviolet pattern by blending a minimal amount of a partially reflecting ink, and ensuring that the modification of the non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink maintains an appearance of two or more pattern inks as a single color/pattern under office lighting when rendered as a part of a fluorescent watermark based on the non-partially reflecting/absorbing ultraviolet ink. The fluorescent watermark can be then rendered on a substrate (e.g., paper or other material).

Claims (30)

1 . A method for configuring a watermark, comprising:

modifying a non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink from an original ultraviolet pattern by blending a minimal amount of a partially reflecting ink, wherein the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink is not partially reflecting or absorbing in an ultraviolet spectrum or exhibits a unique behavior of partially absorbing UV light with a specified wavelength range; and

ensuring that the modification of the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink maintains an appearance of at least two pattern inks as a single color or pattern under standard indoor illumination when rendered as a part of a watermark based on the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the watermark comprises a fluorescent watermark.

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising rendering the watermark on a substrate.

4 . The method of claim 3 wherein the substrate comprises paper.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein ensuring that the modification of the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink maintains an appearance of at least two pattern inks as the single color or pattern under standard indoor illumination when rendered as a part of a watermark based on the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink, further comprises:

determining an amount of reflecting or absorbing colors needed to prevent florescence.

The method of claim 1 wherein ensuring that the modification of the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink maintains an appearance of at least two pattern inks as the single color or pattern under standard indoor illumination when rendered as a part of a watermark based on the non-partially reflecting or absorbing ultraviolet ink, further comprising:

determining an amount of individual reflecting or absorbing colors needed to keep the original ultraviolet pattern under standard indoor illumination.

7 . A method for configuring a watermark, comprising:

modifying an ultraviolet-reactive ink that either (i) lacks a substantial degree of reflectance or absorption in an ultraviolet spectrum, or (ii) exhibits a defined behavior of partial ultraviolet absorption with a specified wavelength range, by blending a minimal amount of partially reflect ink; and

ensuring that the modification maintains an appearance of at least two pattern inks as a single color or pattern under standard indoor illumination when rendered as part of a watermark, wherein the resulting pattern blocks or permits fluorescence under UV illumination to selectively reveal the watermark.

8 . The method of claim 7 wherein the at least two pattern inks are based on a predetermined color scheme.

9 . The method of claim 7 further comprising analyzing the spectral properties of each color to identify reflecting or absorbing colors for fluorescence prevention.

10 . The method of claim 7 further comprising adjusting the proportions of reflecting or absorbing colors.

11 . The method of claim 10 wherein the proportions of reflecting or absorbing colors are adjusted based on optical properties of the reflecting or absorbing colors.

12 . The method of claim 10 wherein the proportions of reflecting or absorbing colors are adjusted based on a compatibility with an original color or pattern.

13 . The method of claim 7 further comprising adjusting the proportions of reflecting or absorbing colors based on their optical properties and compatibility with an original color/pattern.

14 . A printed security feature for a document, comprising:

a pattern ink pair, wherein the pattern ink pair comprises:

a first pattern ink comprising a first arrangement of CMYK ink pixels, wherein the first pattern ink is configured to inhibit fluorescence of an underlying substrate under ultraviolet (UV) light; and

a second pattern ink comprising a second arrangement of CMYK ink pixels, wherein the second pattern ink is configured to permit fluorescence of the underlying substrate under UV light,

wherein the first pattern ink and the second pattern ink are metameric pairs under ambient lighting conditions such that they appear visually indistinguishable under ambient lighting conditions but generate a visible contrast under UV illumination to form a security marking.

15 . The printed security feature of claim 14 wherein the CMYK ink pixels in the first pattern ink and the second pattern ink are formulated by blending amounts of reflecting and absorbing colors to maintain visual consistency under ambient lighting while achieving the desired UV contrast.

16 . The printed security feature of claim 14 wherein the CMYK ink pixels in the first pattern ink include blended amounts of cyan, magenta, and yellow to suppress fluorescence of the underlying substrate under UV light.

17 . The printed security feature of claim 14 wherein the pattern ink pair is generated using a color toolkit configured to optimize color matching under ambient lighting while ensuring differentiation under UV illumination.

18 . The printed security feature of claim 14 wherein the security marking comprises an authentication watermark that is visible only under UV illumination.

19 . The printed security feature of claim 14 wherein the document is selected from the group consisting of a concert ticket, an identification card, a banknote, a certificate, and a security-printed label.
