GOLF CLUB HAVING AN ADJUSTABLE WEIGHT ASSEMBLY
A golf club head includes a body including a striking face having a lower leading edge, and a sole extending from the lower leading edge; and a recessed channel in the sole, wherein a first material in which the recessed channel is defined in has a first density at a first depth from a first outer surface of the first material, and a second density at a second depth from the first outer surface, wherein the second depth is greater than the first depth, and wherein the second density is less than the first density; and a weight assembly including a weight adapted to engage the recessed channel.
1 . A golf club head, comprising:
a body comprising:
a striking face having a lower leading edge, and
a sole extending from the lower leading edge; and
a recessed channel in the sole, wherein a first material in which the recessed channel is defined in has a first density at a first depth from a first outer surface of the first material, and a second density at a second depth from the first outer surface, wherein the second depth is greater than the first depth, and wherein the second density is less than the first density; and
a weight assembly comprising a weight adapted to engage the recessed channel.
2 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the weight assembly further comprises a cover adapted to releasably secure the weight inside the recessed channel, and
wherein the weight is at least partially disposed within the recessed channel and configured to move therein.
3 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the recessed channel is defined in a pocket that comprises the first material and is secured to the body at least in part by a pocket fastener.
4 . The golf club head of claim 3 , comprising a cavity at least partially surrounded by the body,
wherein the pocket fastener comprises:
a head positioned at least partially within the cavity; and
a shaft extending at least partially into the pocket and from the head towards the sole.
5 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the first material has a greater porosity at the second depth than at the first depth.
6 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the first material comprises:
a first outer layer that is substantially non-porous and that defines the first outer surface of the first material; and
a porous interior layer under the first outer layer.
7 . The golf club head of claim 6 , wherein the first material comprises a second outer layer that is substantially non-porous and that defines a second outer surface of the first material opposite to the first outer surface, and
wherein the porous interior layer is between the first and second outer layers.
8 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the weight assembly further comprises:
a cover adapted to releasably secure the weight inside the recessed channel; and
a fastener configured to secure the weight inside the recessed channel only indirectly by the cover.
9 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the sole adjacent to the first material comprises a second material different from the first material, and
wherein a density of the second material at the first depth from an outer surface of the second material is substantially the same as a density of the second material at the second depth from the outer surface of the second material.
10 . The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the weight assembly further comprises a cover adapted to releasably secure the weight inside the recessed channel,
wherein the cover is positionable in at least an unlocked configuration, whereby the cover is raised at least partially out of the recessed channel and the weight is selectively movable within the recessed channel, and a locked configuration, whereby the cover is at least partially disposed within the recessed channel and the weight is secured within the recessed channel, and
wherein between about 0% and about 30% of an outer surface of the weight is visible in the locked configuration.
11 . A golf club head, comprising:
a body comprising:
a striking face having a lower leading edge, and
a sole extending from the lower leading edge;
a pocket in the body, the pocket defining a recessed channel and comprising a substantially non-porous first outer layer and a foamed interior layer under the first outer layer, wherein the first outer layer and the interior layer comprise a same material and are integrally joined together; and
a weight assembly comprising:
a weight at least partially disposed within the recessed channel and configured to move therein,
a cover adapted to releasably secure the weight within the recessed channel, and
a fastener coupling the cover to the body and being selectively movable along a fastener axis.
12 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the pocket further comprises a substantially non-porous second outer layer opposite to the first outer layer, the interior layer being between the first and second outer layers.
13 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein a porosity of the interior layer at a first depth from the first outer layer is less than a porosity of the interior layer at a second depth, greater than the first depth, from the first outer layer.
14 . The golf club head of claim 11 , comprising:
a cavity partially surrounded by the body; and
a pocket opening in the body connecting the cavity to the outside of the golf club head,
wherein the pocket is at least partially fitted into the pocket opening and secured to the body by one or more pocket fasteners.
15 . The golf club head of claim 11 , wherein the golf club head is a metal wood type golf club head or a hybrid type golf club head, and
wherein the pocket is in the sole.
16 . A golf club head, comprising:
a body comprising:
a striking face having a lower leading edge,
a sole extending from the lower leading edge,
a cavity partially surrounded by the striking face and the sole, and
a pocket opening connecting the cavity to the outside of the golf club head,
a pocket at least partially fitted into the opening and secured to the body, the pocket defining a recessed channel and comprising two opposite outer layers and an interior layer between the two opposite outer layers, wherein the interior layer has a higher porosity than each of the two opposite outer layers; and
a weight assembly comprising:
a weight at least partially disposed within the recessed channel and configured to move therein, and
a fastener configured to releasably secure the weight within the recessed channel.
17 . The golf club head of claim 16 , wherein a density of the interior layer is less than a density of each of the two opposite outer layers.
18 . The golf club head of claim 16 , wherein the pocket is secured to the body by at least two pocket fasteners.
19 . The golf club head of claim 16 , wherein the two opposite outer layers and the interior layer form a single integral structure.
20 . The golf club head of claim 16 , wherein the weight assembly comprises a cover adapted to at least partially cover the weight inside the recessed channel, and
wherein the fastener couples the cover to the body and is selectively movable along a fastener axis.
