Abstract

Methods and systems directed to facilitating wireless communication with a wireless terminal are disclosed. A baseband unit (BBU) is configured to perform a first portion of a physical-layer (PHY) protocol of a radio access network (RAN). A remote radio unit (RRU) is configured to perform a remaining portion of the PHY protocol. The RRU is communicatively coupled to the BBU over a non-deterministic communication link. An entity other than the RRU is also used. The system is configured to determine a communication quality parameter and to send a message related to the communication quality parameter to said entity.

Claims (22)

1 . A system for facilitating wireless communication with a wireless terminal comprising:

a baseband unit (BBU) configured to perform a first portion of a physical-layer (PHY) protocol of a radio access network (RAN);

a remote radio unit (RRU) configured to perform a remaining portion of the PHY protocol, the RRU communicatively coupled to the BBU over a non-deterministic communication link; and

an entity other than the RRU; and

wherein the system is configured to determine a communication quality parameter and to send a message related to the communication quality parameter to said entity.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to send the message related to the communication quality parameter in response to receiving a request for the communication quality parameter.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to send the message related to the communication quality parameter in response to detecting an event related to the communication quality parameter.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication quality parameter is based on a condition of the non-deterministic communication link used for communication between the BBU and the RRU.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication quality parameter is based on an availability of a computational resource in the RRU.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to establish a value for a RAN parameter based on the communication quality parameter.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the PHY protocol of the RAN is split between the BBU and the RRU in accordance with a fronthaul split Option 7-1 or Option 7-2 as defined by 3GPP.

8 . A method for facilitating wireless communication with a wireless terminal, the method comprising:

performing, using a baseband unit (BBU), a first portion of a physical-layer (PHY) protocol of a radio access network (RAN);

performing, using a remote radio unit (RRU), a remaining portion of the PHY protocol, wherein the RRU is communicatively coupled to the BBU over a non-deterministic communication link;

determining a communication quality parameter; and

sending a message related to the communication quality parameter to an entity other than the RRU.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein sending the message related to the communication quality parameter comprises sending the message related to the communication quality parameter in response to receiving a request for the communication quality parameter.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein sending the message related to the communication quality parameter comprises sending the message related to the communication quality parameter in response to detecting an event related to the communication quality parameter.

11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the communication quality parameter comprises determining the communication quality parameter based on a condition of the non-deterministic communication link.

12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the communication quality parameter comprises determining the communication quality parameter is based on an availability of a computational resource in the RRU.

13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises establishing a value for a RAN parameter based on the communication quality parameter.

14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the PHY protocol of the RAN is split between the BBU and the RRU in accordance with a fronthaul split Option 7-1 or Option 7-2 as defined by 3GPP.
