NON-CONFORMING GOLF BALLS MADE FROM PLASTICIZED THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS
Golf balls having a single or dual-layered solid core are provided. In one embodiment, the golf ball has dimensions and properties that do not conform to the rules of the United States Golf Association (USGA). For example, the ball weight; ball size; ball spherical symmetry; ball initial velocity; and/or ball overall distance may fall outside of the USGA standards. The dual-layered core can have an inner core comprising a thermoplastic composition and surrounding outer core comprising a thermoset composition. In another embodiment, the dual-layered core has an inner core comprising a thermoplastic composition and outer core comprising a thermoset composition. The thermoplastic composition preferably comprises an ethylene acid copolymer ionomer and plasticizer. The thermoset composition preferably comprises polybutadiene rubber. The ball further includes a cover of at least one layer.
1 . A golf ball comprising:
i) a core formed from a thermoplastic composition, the core having an outer surface hardness (H core surface ) and a center hardness (H core center ), H core surface being greater than H core center to provide a positive hardness gradient, the thermoplastic composition comprising:
a) an acid copolymer of ethylene and an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid;
b) a plasticizer; and
c) a cation source present in an amount sufficient to neutralize up to 100% of all acid groups present in the composition; and
ii) a cover disposed about the core;
wherein the golf ball has a non-conforming overall distance of greater than 320 yards.
2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the acid copolymer further includes a softening monomer selected from the group consisting of alkyl acrylates and methacrylates.
3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a diameter that is at least 1.68 inches.
4 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a diameter that is less than 1.68 inches.
5 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a weight that is greater than 1.62 ounces.
6 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a weight that is no greater than 1.62 ounces.
7 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a conforming initial velocity.
8 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic composition further comprises a non-acid polymer selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyamides, polyesters, polyethers, polyurethanes, metallocene-catalyzed polymers, single-site catalyst polymerized polymers, ethylene propylene rubber, ethylene propylene diene rubber, styrenic block copolymer rubbers, alkyl acrylate rubbers, and functionalized derivatives thereof.
9 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic composition further comprises an alkyl acrylate rubber selected from ethylene-alkyl acrylates and ethylene-alkyl methacrylates, and wherein the alkyl acrylate rubber is present in the thermoplastic composition at an amount of greater than 50 wt %, based on the combined weight of the acid copolymer and the alkyl acrylate rubber.
10 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic composition comprises from 3 wt % to 50 wt % of the plasticizer, based on the total weight of the thermoplastic composition.
11 . The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the plasticizer is an alkyl oleate selected from the group consisting of methyl oleate, ethyl oleate, propyl oleate, butyl oleate, and octyl oleate, and mixtures thereof.
12 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein at least 90% of all acid groups present in the thermoplastic composition are neutralized.
