Abstract

In one embodiment, a sensor includes a window, a light source that can emit an optical signal toward the window, a receiver to detect an optical signal reflected off a target and received through the window, and a controller to determine a characteristic of the target. The emitted optical signal is capable of being used to reduce an obscurant on the window by absorption, as well as to scatter off of targets located in the environment of the sensor to obtain information about that environment.

Claims (41)

1 . A sensor comprising:

a light source configured to emit an optical signal toward a window, wherein the emitted optical signal is configured to:

reduce an obscurant on the window through optical absorption by the obscurant of at least a portion of the emitted optical signal; and

scatter from a target located a distance from the sensor;

a receiver configured to detect a received optical signal, the received optical signal comprising a portion of the emitted optical signal scattered from the target and transmitted through the window; and

a controller configured to determine a characteristic of the target based on the received optical signal.

2 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein reducing the obscurant comprises melting, sublimating, or evaporating the obscurant.

3 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the obscurant comprises ice and reducing the obscurant comprises melting the ice.

4 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the window is (1) part of a windshield of a vehicle that the sensor is part of, or (2) part of an enclosure of the sensor.

5 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic of the target is a distance to the target and determining the distance is based on a time-of-arrival for the received optical signal.

6 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor further comprises a conductive heating mechanism disposed outside a field of regard of the sensor.

7 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes only one light source.

8 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the emitted optical signal is configured to have a wavelength between about 1400 nanometers and about 1700 nanometers.

9 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to adjust a scan pattern of the sensor to reduce the obscurant on the window.

10 . The sensor of claim 9 , wherein adjusting the scan pattern comprises slowing a rate at which the emitted optical signal is scanned in a particular region of the window.

11 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to adjust a peak power, average power, or pulse energy of the emitted optical signal to modify the sensor's ability to reduce the obscurant on the window.

12 . The sensor of claim 1 , further comprising a scanner configured to scan the emitted optical signal across a field of regard of the sensor thereby scanning the emitted optical signal across a region of the window.

13 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a lidar system and the emitted optical signal comprises an emitted pulse of light.

14 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the obscurant comprises water, frost, ice, dew, mist, or fog.

15 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein:

the window is a first window;

the emitted optical signal travels through a second window; and

the obscurant is located on the first or the second window.

16 . The sensor of claim 15 , wherein:

the first window is part of a sensor housing;

the second window is part of a vehicle; and

a gap exists between the first and second windows.

17 . The sensor of claim 1 , wherein the obscurant at least partially prevents the emitted optical signal from reaching the target.

18 . The sensor of claim 1 , further comprising an obstruction detection system configured to monitor a status of the obscurant on the window.

19 . A lidar system comprising:

a light source configured to emit an optical signal toward a window wherein the emitted optical signal is configured to:

reduce an obscurant on the window through optical absorption by the obscurant of at least a portion of the emitted optical signal; and

scatter from a target located a distance from the system;

a scanner configured to scan the optical signal across a field of regard of the system;

a receiver configured to detect a received optical signal, the received optical signal comprising a portion of the emitted optical signal scattered by the target and transmitted through the window; and

a controller configured to determine a characteristic of the target based on the received optical signal.

20 . A method comprising:

emitting, by a light source of a sensor, an output signal toward a window;

detecting, by the sensor, an obscurant on the window;

reducing, by absorption of the output signal, an obscurant on the window; and

obtaining information about an environment of the sensor from a received signal.
