Abstract

A golf ball is disclosed herein that has at least one modified aerodynamic characteristic or performance trait. More specifically, the golf ball disclosed herein can include a dimple pattern having a specific drag coefficient and/or specific integrated drag area.

Claims (132)

1 . A golf ball comprising at least a core, a casing layer, and a cover formed from urethane,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces, a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, a compression of at least 90, a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.805, and an initial velocity of at least 250 feet/second;

the core having a weight of at least 1.245 ounces, a diameter of at least 1.525 inches, and a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.785;

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070, 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;

wherein the dimple pattern has an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

where C D (Re) is established at a launch condition of a golf ball speed of 182.0 mph, a launch angle of 10.0 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,700 rpm, such that 14,500≤DA≤15,150;

wherein C L ≥0.130 at a Reynolds number of 240,000 and a spin ratio of 0.060; and

wherein the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient at a Reynolds number of 225,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.625≤C D /C L ≤1.700.

2 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 92.

3 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 100.

4 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball coefficient of restitution is at least 0.807.

5 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the casing has a thickness of 0.045 inches-0.055 inches.

6 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the casing has a thickness of 0.030 inches-0.040 inches.

7 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the casing has a thickness of 0.032 inches-0.038 inches.

8 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the cover has a thickness of 0.020 inches-0.030 inches.

9 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the cover has a thickness of 0.025 inches-0.035 inches.

10 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the cover has a thickness of 0.028 inches-0.032 inches.

11 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.250 ounces.

12 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.290 ounces.

13 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of at least 1.530 inches.

14 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of at least 1.545 inches.

15 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a coefficient of restitution of 0.790-0.805.

16 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a coefficient of restitution of 0.795-0.805.

17 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is a three-layer golf ball.

18 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is a four-layer golf ball.

19 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core is a dual layer core.

20 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern has 250-290 dimples.

21 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a dimple volume is 0.0435 in 3 -0.0455 in 3 .

22 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern has a surface coverage of 79.0%-81.5%.

23 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern comprises at least four different dimple diameters.

24 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein an average dimple diameter is 0.180 inches-0.190 inches.

25 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a minimum dimple diameter disparity is 0.005 inches-0.015 inches.

26 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a maximum dimple diameter disparity is 0.030 inches-0.045 inches.

27 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a minimum dimple diameter is 0.130 inches-0.145 inches.

28 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a maximum dimple diameter is 0.195 inches-0.215 inches.

29 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein C L ≤0.185 at a Reynolds number of 185,000 and a spin ratio of 0.105.

30 . A three layer golf ball comprising a core, a casing layer, and a cover formed from urethane,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces, a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, a compression of at least 92, a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.805, and an initial velocity of at least 250 feet/second;

the core having a weight of at least 1.245 ounces, a diameter of at least 1.525 inches, and a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.790, and the casing having a thickness of 0.045 inches-0.055 inches;

the cover having a thickness of 0.020 inches-0.030 inches and comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070, 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;

wherein the dimple pattern has an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

31 . A four layer golf ball comprising a dual layer core, a casing layer, and a cover formed from urethane,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces, a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, a compression of at least 100, a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.807, and an initial velocity of at least 250 feet/second;

the core having a weight of at least 1.290 ounces, a diameter of at least 1.545 inches, and a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.790, and the casing having a thickness of 0.030 inches-0.040 inches;

the cover having a thickness of 0.025 inches-0.035 inches and comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070, 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and 0.235≤C D ≤0.245 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;
