Abstract

Certain embodiments reduce the risks of traditionally programmed algorithms such as syntax errors, unclear logic, and the need for a non-trader programmer to develop the algorithm as specified by a trader by reducing or eliminating the writing of programming code by a user. Certain embodiments provide a design canvas area and blocks for designing an algorithm. Certain embodiments provide for grouping blocks placed in the design canvas area. Certain embodiments provide for virtualized group blocks enabling dynamic instantiation of portions of an algorithm to handle particular discrete events. Certain embodiments provide for operation of some or all portions of an algorithm when a connection between a client device and an algorithm server is broken.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further including:

registering by the computing device the event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block to be invoked when the discrete event occurs.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the occurrence of the discrete event is based on data received by the computing device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further including:

determining by the computing device, while the program code associated with the definition for the algorithm is executing, the occurrence of a plurality of discrete events, wherein an event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block is registered to be invoked when each of the plurality of discrete events occurs; and

invoking by the computing device for each of the plurality of discrete events the event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block, wherein invoking the event handler includes:

instantiating by the computing device a new instance of the algorithm functionality represented by the one or more blocks in the virtualized group block; and

executing by the computing device program code associated with the algorithm functionality in the new instance based on the corresponding discrete event.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is a client device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is an algorithm server.

9 . A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein instructions executable by a processor, including instructions executable to:

receive a command to execute program code associated with a definition for an algorithm, wherein the definition for the algorithm is based on an arrangement of blocks specified in a visual programming environment, wherein the arrangement of blocks includes a virtualized group block, wherein the virtualized group block is a block that when a discrete event is received on a discrete event input of the virtualized group block, a new instance of algorithm functionality represented by one or more blocks in the virtualized group block is instantiated;

execute the program code associated with the definition for the algorithm;

determine, while the program code associated with the definition for the algorithm is executing, the occurrence of a discrete event, wherein an event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block is registered to be invoked with the discrete event when the discrete event occurs; and

invoke the event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block, wherein the instructions to invoke the event handler include instructions executable to:

instantiate a new instance of the algorithm functionality represented by the one or more blocks in the virtualized group block; and

execute program code associated with the algorithm functionality in the new instance based on the discrete event.

10 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further including instructions executable to:

receive the definition for the algorithm; and

generate the program code associated with the definition of the algorithm.

11 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further including instructions executable to:

register the event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block to be invoked when the discrete event occurs.

12 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the occurrence of the discrete event is determined based on data received by a computing device including the processor.

13 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , further including instructions executable to:

determine, while the program code associated with the definition for the algorithm is executing, the occurrence of a plurality of discrete events, wherein an event handler associated with the discrete event input of the virtualized group block is registered to be invoked when each of the plurality of discrete events occurs; and
