Abstract

A disclosed example method involves, when a device is operating in a stationary mode and before a need of the device to communicate data, determining whether a stored timing advance is valid. When the stored timing advance is not valid, a valid timing advance is determined before the need of the device to communicate the data.

Claims (48)

1 . A method for use by a device, the method comprising:

performing wireless communications with a base station;

storing a timing advance value;

determining whether a signal strength measurement of the base station is within a threshold range;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to be within the threshold range,

transmitting data to the base station using the stored timing advance value;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to not be within the threshold range,

transmitting a request message to the base station; and

if the request message is transmitted to the base station based on the signal strength measurement of the base station being determined to not be within the threshold range,

receiving, from the base station, an updated timing advance value.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message is a channel request message with a specific channel request cause code.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the request message comprises transmitting an access burst over a random access channel (RACH).

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the device, whether a pre-determined number of attempts to access a network have failed.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising reverting from operating in a stationary mode to operating in a moving mode when it is determined that the pre-determined number of attempts to access the network have failed.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: storing multiple timing advance values for use in different cells.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the device is a mobile station.

8 . An apparatus comprising: a processor configured to:

perform wireless communications with a base station;

store a timing advance value;

determine whether a signal strength measurement of the base station is within a threshold range;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to be within the threshold range,

transmit data to the base station using the stored timing advance value;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to not be within the threshold range,

transmit a request message to the base station; and

if the request message is transmitted to the base station based on the signal strength measurement of the base station being determined to not be within the threshold range,

receive, from the base station, an updated timing advance value.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the request message is a channel request message with a specific channel request cause code.

10 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the request message is transmitted as an access burst over a random access channel (RACH).

11 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine whether a pre-determined number of attempts to access a network have failed.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to revert the apparatus from operating in a stationary mode to operating in a moving mode when it is determined that the pre-determined number of attempts to access the network have failed.

13 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to store multiple timing advance values for use in different cells.

14 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the apparatus is a mobile station.

15 . A computer readable storage memory having instructions stored thereon that, when executed, cause a device to at least:

perform wireless communications with a base station;

store a timing advance value;

determine whether a signal strength measurement of the base station is within a threshold range;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to be within the threshold range,

transmit data to the base station using the stored timing advance value;

if the signal strength measurement of the base station is determined to not be within the threshold range,

transmit a request message to the base station; and

if the request message is transmitted to the base station based on the signal strength measurement of the base station being determined to not be within the threshold range,

receive, from the base station, an updated timing advance value.

16 . The computer readable storage memory of claim 15 , wherein the request message is a channel request message with a specific channel request cause code.

17 . The computer readable storage memory of claim 15 , wherein the request message is transmitted as an access burst over a random access channel (RACH).

18 . The computer readable storage memory of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the device to determine whether a pre-determined number of attempts to access a network have failed.

19 . The computer readable storage memory of claim 18 , wherein the instructions further cause the device to revert from operating in a stationary mode to operating in a moving mode when it is determined that the pre-determined number of attempts to access the network have failed.

20 . The computer readable storage memory of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the device to store multiple timing advance values for use in different cells.
