Abstract

An optical system for a head-worn computer includes an upper optical module adapted to convert illumination into image light by illuminating a reflective display through a field lens, wherein the image light is transmitted back through the field lens, then through a partially reflective partially transmissive surface and into a lower optic module adapted to present the image light to an eye of a user wearing the head-worn computer and the upper optical module being positioned within a housing for the head-worn computer and having a height of less than 24 mm, as measured from the reflective display to the bottom edge of the rotationally curved partial mirror.

Claims (51)

1 . A wearable device comprising a light source configured to communicate source light to a polarizer, wherein:

the polarizer is configured to communicate the source light to a display of the wearable device via a quarter-wave plate;

the wearable device comprises a beam splitter and a field lens;

the quarter-wave plate is configured to, in accordance with receiving the source light, communicate image light to the field lens and further to the polarizer; and

the beam splitter is configured to receive the image light via the field lens, and is further configured to present an image comprising the image light to a user of the wearable device.

2 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the polarizer is further configured to communicate light toward a light sensor of the wearable device.

3 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein the light communicated via the polarizer comprises light reflected by an eye of the user.

4 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein:

the beam splitter is further configured to receive scene light from an environment of the wearable device via a curved partial mirror,

the curved partial mirror comprises a bottom edge, and

a distance from the display to the bottom edge is less than 24 millimeters.

5 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the display is further configured to communicate the source light via a positive lens.

6 . The wearable device of claim 5 , wherein the positive lens comprises a Fresnel lens.

7 . The wearable device of claim 5 , wherein the positive lens comprises a diffractive lens.

8 . The wearable device of claim 5 , wherein the positive lens comprises a refractive lens.

9 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein:

the wearable device further comprises an upper optics module comprising:

the field lens,

the display, and

the light source;

the wearable device further comprises a lower optics module, different from the upper optics module, the lower optics module comprising the beam splitter;

the upper optics module is configured to rest above a line of sight of a user when the wearable device is worn by the user; and

the lower optics module is configured to intersect the line of sight of the user when the wearable device is worn by the user.

10 . The wearable head device of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises one or more LEDs, QLEDs, laser diodes, or fluorescent lights.

11 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the light source is configured to communicate source light to a backlighting optical system of the wearable device.

12 . The wearable device of claim 11 , wherein:

the backlighting optical system comprises the polarizer, and

the polarizer is disposed at an exit surface of the backlighting optical system.

13 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a cover, the cover configured to absorb light of a first wavelength and further configured to communicate light of a second wavelength different from the first wavelength.

14 . A method comprising:

presenting source light to a polarizer, wherein:

the polarizer is configured to communicate the source light to a display of a wearable device via a quarter-wave plate;

the wearable device comprises a beam splitter and a field lens;

the quarter-wave plate is configured to, in accordance with receiving the source light, communicate image light to the field lens and further to the polarizer;

the beam splitter is configured to receive the image light via the field lens, and is further configured to present an image comprising the image light to a user of the wearable device.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the polarizer is further configured to communicate light to a light sensor of the wearable device.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the light communicated via the polarizer comprises light reflected by an eye of the user.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

the beam splitter is configured to receive scene light from an environment of the wearable device via a curved partial mirror,

the curved partial mirror comprises a bottom edge, and

a distance from the display to the bottom edge is less than 24 millimeters.

18 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the display is configured to receive the source light via a positive lens.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the positive lens comprises a Fresnel lens.

20 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

the wearable device comprises an upper optics module comprising:

the field lens,

the display, and

the light source;

the wearable device further comprises a lower optics module, different from the upper optics module, the lower optics module comprising the beam splitter;

the upper optics module is configured to rest above a line of sight of a user when the wearable device is worn by the user; and

the lower optics module is configured to intersect the line of sight of the user when the wearable device is worn by the user.
