Abstract

A golf ball dimple pattern is disclosed herein that includes dimples having a variety of dimple diameters dispersed amongst two domains, which are tiled onto the outer surface of the golf ball. The dimple pattern has four dimple diameters appearing in only one of the two domains, yielding highly unique patterns in each, but where those dimples do not dominate the dimple configuration of their respective domains. Each domain has a different dimple diameter that appears most frequently, and that diameter also appears in the opposite domain. Various other aspects of the dimple pattern are disclosed herein.

Claims (26)

1 . A golf ball having an outer surface comprising a plurality of dimples disposed thereon, wherein the dimples are arranged in multiple copies of a first domain and a second domain, the first domain and the second domain being tessellated to cover the outer surface of the golf ball in a uniform pattern having no dimple-free great circles and consisting of four first domains and four second domains, and wherein:

the dimple pattern within the first domain is different from the dimple pattern within the second domain;

the plurality of dimples comprises dimples at least three different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least one additional dimple diameter;

the total number of dimples on the golf ball is at least 250;

wherein of the at least three different dimple diameters, there are at least two diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0, where SD1 is a number of dimples positioned within the first domain having a given diameter, and SD2 is a number of dimples positioned within the second domain having said given diameter;

wherein for the dimple diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0, |SD1−SD2|≤9; and

wherein SD1≤28 and SD2≤28 for each of the at least three different dimple diameters.

2 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein there are at least three dimple diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0.

3 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein there are at least four dimple diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0.

4 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein for the dimple diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0, |SD1−SD2|≤6.

5 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein for the dimple diameters for which either SD1=0 or SD2=0, |SD1−SD2|≤3.

6 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dimples comprises dimples having at least five different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least three additional dimple diameters.

7 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dimples comprises dimples having at least seven different dimple diameters including a minimum dimple diameter, a maximum dimple diameter, and at least five additional dimple diameters.

8 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein a difference between ΣSD1 and ΣSD2 is 15 or less, where ΣSD1 is the total number of dimples positioned in the first domain and ΣSD2 is the total number of dimples positioned in the second domain.

9 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the difference between ΣSD1 and ΣSD2 is 10 or less.

10 . The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the difference between ΣSD1 and ΣSD2 is 5 or less.

11 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein, for each of the different dimple diameters on the ball, SD1≠SD2.

12 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein at least one of: (i) SD1=0 or (ii) SD2=0 for the minimum dimple diameter.

13 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein at least one of: (i) SD1=0 or (ii) SD2=0 for the maximum dimple diameter.

14 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein SD1=0 or SD2=0 for the minimum dimple diameter, and SD1=0 or SD2=0 for the maximum dimple diameter.

15 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein SD1≤25 and SD2≤25 for each of the at least three different dimple diameters.

16 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein SD1≤22 and SD2≤22 for each of the at least three different dimple diameters.

17 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein only one dimple diameter has at least one of: (i) SD1≥20, or (ii) SD2≥20.

18 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein only two dimple diameters have at least one of: (i) SD1≥15, or (ii) SD2≥15.

19 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein only two dimple diameters have at least one of: (i) SD1≥15, or (ii) SD2≥15, such that one of the two dimple diameters has SD1≥15 and SD2≤15, and the other one of the two dimple diameters has SD1≤15 and SD2≥15.

20 . The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the total number of dimples on the ball is 450 or less.
