Abstract

An article of footwear with an upper, a sole assembly connected to the upper, and a flap coupled to the article of footwear proximate the bite line. The article of footwear includes a closure system comprising a lace configured to engage the flap. The closure system is adjustable to secure the flap to the upper or to release the flap from the upper.

Claims (28)

1 . An article of footwear comprising:

an upper;

a sole;

a bite line;

a heel region, a midfoot region, and a forefoot region;

a medial side and a lateral side extending between the forefoot region and the heel region;

a flap positioned entirely along the midfoot region on the medial or lateral side of the article of footwear, wherein the flap has an upper region and a lower region with a different thickness and rigidity than the upper region; and

a closure system comprising a lace with a first end coupled to an adjustable dial positioned in the heel region and a second end coupled to the lower region of the flap, wherein the lace is configured to cross over an outer surface portion of the flap to engage a lace guide or a lace anchor provided on the outer surface portion of the flap,

wherein the closure system is configured to (i) secure the flap to the medial or lateral side of the upper when the lace is tightened and (ii) release the flap from the medial or lateral side of the upper when the lace is loosened.

2 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap comprises one or more layers of a rigid or semi-rigid material.

3 . The article of footwear of claim 2 , wherein the one or more layers of material comprise a composite material, a carbon fiber material, a thermoset material, or a thermoplastic material.

4 . The article of footwear of claim 2 , wherein the flap includes one or more additional layers of material provided along or adjacent to the bite line to increase a stiffness or a rigidity of the lower region of the flap.

5 . The article of footwear of claim 2 , wherein the flap includes areas in which additional layers of material are applied to provide higher stabilization effects.

6 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap has a thickness that varies between the upper region of the flap and the lower region of the flap.

7 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap has a width that tapers along a length of the flap from the bite line to the upper region of the flap.

8 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap has a semi-circular shape with a rounded edge portion and a sharp edge portion.

9 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap includes one or more grooves configured to receive the lace.

10 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the flap is moveable between a relaxed position and an engaged position.

11 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the flap is configured to transition to the engaged position when the lace is pulled taut.

12 . The article of footwear of claim 11 , wherein the lace is pulled taut when a downward pressure is applied to the sole or when the forefoot region is not under flexion.

13 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the flap is configured to transition to the relaxed position when slack is introduced to the lace.

14 . The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein said slack is introduced to the lace when a downward pressure is lifted from the sole or when there is flexion in the forefoot region.

15 . The article of footwear of claim 13 , wherein the lace is configured to release at least a forefoot end of the flap when said slack is introduced to the lace.

16 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the flap is configured to arc outwards and away from the upper as the flap transitions from the engaged position to the relaxed position.

17 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the lace remains attached or secured to the lace guide or the lace anchor when the flap is in the relaxed position.

18 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the second end of the lace is attached or coupled to the lace anchor.

19 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the lace is configured to engage both the lace guide and the lace anchor.

20 . The article of footwear of claim 19 , wherein the lace guide and the lace anchor are provided on different parts of the flap.
