Abstract

Golf balls disclosed herein have a combination of aerodynamic properties and construction parameters providing a desired set of performance characteristics.

Claims (406)

1 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces and a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches;

the core having a weight (W core ) of at least 1.245 ounces and a diameter (D core ) of at least 1.525 inches;

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that:

0.225≤C D1 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

0.225≤C D2 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and

0.225≤C D3 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;

the dimple pattern having an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

where C D (Re) is established at a launch condition of a golf ball speed of 182.0 mph, a launch angle of 10.0 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,700 rpm, such that: 13,750≤DA≤14,750, and

wherein:

(i) the golf ball has a compression that is less than 60, and a golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.785-0.815;

(ii) the golf ball has a compression of at least 60 and less than 80, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.770-0.815;

(iii) the golf ball has a compression of at least 80 and less than 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.740-0.810; or

(iv) the golf ball has a compression of at least 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.710-0.780.

2 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is less than 60, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.785-0.815.

3 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 60 and less than 80, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.770-0.815.

4 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 80 and less than 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.740-0.810.

5 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is 0.710-0.780.

6 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a Flight Factor (F) defined by the following equation:

wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 120.

7 . The golf ball according to claim 6 , wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 130.

8 . The golf ball according to claim 6 , wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 140.

9 . The golf ball according to claim 6 , wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 150.

10 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient (C D ) and the lift coefficient (C L ) at a Reynolds number of 225,000, and spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship:

13 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is no greater than 0.800.

14 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is no greater than 0.780.

15 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core coefficient of restitution (COR core) is no greater than 0.770.

16 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core coefficient of restitution (COR core) is no greater than 0.750.

17 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is a two-layer golf ball.

18 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is a three-layer golf ball.

19 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is a four-layer golf ball.

20 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.260 ounces and a diameter of at least 1.530 inches.

21 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.300 ounces and a diameter of at least 1.545 inches.

22 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a Speed Factor(S) defined by the following equation:

23 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein:

0.230≤C D1 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070;

0.230≤C D2 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095; and

0.230≤C D3 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100.

24 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein:

0.225≤C D1 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070;

0.225≤C D2 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095; and

0.225≤C D3 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100.

25 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area is defined such that: 14,000≤DA≤14,750.

26 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area is defined such that: 14,000≤DA≤14,500.

27 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area is defined such that: 13,750≤DA≤14,500.

28 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area is defined such that: 14,250≤DA≤14,750.

29 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces and a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches;

the core having a weight (W core ) of at least 1.245 ounces and a diameter (D core ) of at least 1.525 inches;

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that:

0.225≤C D1 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

0.225≤C D2 ≤0.235 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and
