DISTRIBUTION OF CLIENTS ACROSS A NETWORK
Systems and methods for instituting redistribution of wireless clients to improve service, comprising via access point (AP), multiple APs acting in concert, and/or a central entity, in connection with a network, allowing a client to associate; deciding that an associated client should be redistributed based on a connection metric, wherein the decision is based on at least one of, a probability calculation, network metric and a threshold comparison; and via the AP, sending the associated client a trigger, wherein the trigger is at least one of, a redistribution request and a disconnect message.
1 . A method for a first access point (“AP”) in a WiFi network to redistribute a client that is associated with the first AP, the method comprising:
deciding that the client should be redistributed from the first AP to another AP in the WiFi network based on a connection metric;
sending the client a trigger; and
preventing the client from re-associating with the first AP for a certain period of time after the trigger is sent to the client.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein preventing the client from re-associating with the first AP for a certain period of time after the trigger is sent to the client comprises ignoring at least one connection request received from the client at the first AP.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the trigger is a redistribution request.
4 . The method of claim 3 wherein the trigger is a redistribution request in the form of a Base Service Set Transition Management (“BTM”) request that includes a list of candidate APs in the WiFi network.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the trigger is a disconnect message.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the decision that the client should be redistributed from the first AP to another AP in the WiFi network is made external to the first AP and provided to the first AP.
7 . A method for a client to operate in a WiFi network, the method comprising:
associating with a first access point (“AP”) in the WiFi network;
receiving a redistribution request from the first AP, the redistribution request including a list of neighboring APs in the WiFi network;
in response to receiving a redistribution request from the first AP, sending probe requests to at least some of APs in the list of neighboring APs, where each probe request includes at least one of a signal to noise ratio or a received signal strength indicator; and
receiving a probe response from at least one of the neighboring APs that includes an estimated performance metric.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the estimated performance metric comprises an estimated throughput.
9 . The method of claim 7 , the method further comprising comparing estimated performance metrics received from at least two different ones of the neighboring APs.
10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the redistribution request comprises a Base Service Set Transition Management (“BTM”) request.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the BTM request includes a vendor-specific sub-element for each entry in the list of neighboring APs that includes at least one of a client count, a client load, a capacity estimate or a throughput estimate.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the vendor-specific sub-element for each entry in the list of neighboring APs is timed.
