Abstract

1. Chimeric gene containing several herbicide tolerance genes, plant cell and plant which are tolerant to several herbicides. 2. The plant is tolerant to several herbicides at the same time, in particular to the inhibitors of HPPD and to those of EPSPS and/or to the dihalohydroxybenzonitriles. 3. Use for removing weeds from plants with several herbicides.

Claims (18)

1. A chimeric gene comprising at least two basic chimeric genes each comprising regulatory elements necessary for its transcription in plants and a coding sequence encoding an enzyme conferring on plants the tolerance to a herbicide, characterized in that one of the coding sequences encodes hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD).

2. The chimeric gene according to claim 1 , characterized in that it comprises, in addition, a third chimeric gene containing a sequence encoding an enzyme conferring herbicide tolerance on plants.

3. The chimeric gene according to claim 2 , characterized in that the second coding sequence encodes an EPSPS conferring tolerance to a herbicide inhibiting EPSPS.

4. The chimeric gene according to claim 1 , characterized in that the second coding sequence encodes tolerance to glyphosate.

5. The chimeric gene according to claim 4 , characterized in that the second coding sequence encodes an EPSPS conferring tolerance to glyphosate.

6. The chimeric gene according to claim 4 , characterized in that the second coding sequence encodes glyphosate oxidoreductase, an enzyme for detoxification of glyphosate.

7. The chimeric gene according to claim 2 , characterized in that the sequence encoding HPPD is derived from Pseudomonas sp.

8. The chimeric gene according to claim 7 , characterized in that the sequence encoding HPPD is derived from Pseudomonas fluorescens.

9. The chimeric gene according to claim 2 , characterized in that the sequence encoding HPPD is of plant origin.

10. The chimeric gene according to claim 9 , characterized in that the sequence encoding HPPD is derived from Arabidopsis thaliana.

11. The chimeric gene according to claim 9 , characterized in that the sequence encoding HPPD is derived from Daucus carota.

12. A vector characterized in that it comprises the chimeric gene according to claim 1 .

13. The vector according to claim 12 , characterized in that it consists of a plasmid.

14. A plant cell transformed with at least two chimeric genes each containing a coding sequence encoding an enzyme conferring on plants tolerance to a herbicide, wherein one of said coding sequences encodes hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD).

15. The plant cell according to claim 14 , characterized in that it contains three basic chimeric genes each containing regulatory elements and a coding sequence encoding an enzyme conferring on plants the tolerance to a herbicide.

16. The plant cell according to claim 14 , wherein said plant cell contains at least one chimeric gene.

17. A plant which contains the plant cell according to claim 14 .

18. A process for transforming plants to make them tolerant to at least two herbicides, said process comprising the steps of transforming a plant cell with the chimeric gene of claim 1 and regenerating a plant from the transformed plant cell.
