Abstract

A method for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system includes creating a linked list of application components installed on the computer system. The nested directories are then traced back to find a target directory for each application component in the linked list. Thereafter, a request to find a selected application is received from a calling module. The method may further include the operations of searching the linked list for a target directory for each component of the selected application, and making the target directory for each component of the selected application available to the calling module, preferably by returning the target directories to the calling module. A computer readable media for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system also is described.

Claims (36)

1. A method for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system, comprising:

creating a linked list of application components installed on the computer system;

tracing back nested directories to find a target directory for each application component in the linked list; and

receiving a request to find a selected application from a calling module.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

searching the linked list for a target directory for each component of the selected application; and

making the target directory for each component of the selected application available to the calling module.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the target directory for each component of the selected application is returned to the calling module.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operation of creating the linked list of application components installed on the computer system includes scanning shortcut link files to find a target directory for each component of applications having a shortcut link file.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the calling module includes a graphical user interface that displays the applications installed on the computer system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected application is one of an individual application and an application suite.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application components include a main application part and at least one sub-application part.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system is a personal computer.

9. A method for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system, comprising:

creating a linked list of application components installed on the computer system;

tracing back nested directories to find a target directory for each application component in the linked list;

receiving a request to find a selected application from a calling module;

searching the linked list for a target directory for each component of the selected application; and

returning the target directory for each component of the selected application to the calling module.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the operation of creating the linked list of application components installed on the computer system includes scanning shortcut link files to find a target directory for each component of applications having a shortcut link file.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the calling module includes a graphical user interface that displays the applications installed on the computer system.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the selected application is one of an individual application and an application suite.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the application components include a main application part and at least one sub-application part.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is a personal computer.

15. A computer readable media containing program instructions for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system, the computer readable media comprising:

program instructions for creating a linked list of application components installed on the computer system;

program instructions for tracing back nested directories to find a target directory for each application component in the linked list; and

program instructions for receiving a request to find a selected application from a calling module.

16. The computer readable media of claim 15 , further comprising:

program instructions for searching the linked list for a target directory for each component of the selected application; and

program instructions for making the target directory for each component of the selected application available to the calling module.

17. The computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions for making the target directory for each component of the selected application available to the calling module include program instructions for returning the target directory for each component of the selected application to the calling module.

18. The computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the program instructions for creating the linked list of application components installed on the computer system include program instructions for scanning shortcut link files to find a target directory for each component of applications having a shortcut link file.

19. The computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the calling module includes a graphical user interface that displays the applications installed on the computer system.

20. The computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the selected application is one of an individual application and an application suite.

21. The computer readable media of claim 15 , wherein the application components include a main application part and at least one sub-application part.
