Abstract

This present invention relates to improvements in seed and seed-related products, processes for making such products and processes for establishing and improving seed beds and seed bed germination. As additional benefits, this invention is directed at improving soil productivity through enhancements in soil fertility, soil condition/tilth, and control of soil moisture. Further, the invention relates to productive use of certain types of abundantly available manufacturing waste, which waste is currently being disposed of in landfills.

Claims (20)

1. A method of enhancing the control of moisture about a single grass seed to establish and improve seed beds comprising:

providing a coating composition surrounding a single grass seed in relative amounts to hold moisture about said grass seed, and provide immediate use of said moisture to assist in germination of said grass seed;

said coating composition comprising i) a binder, ii) a soil conditioning material consisting essentially of a particulate that holds moisture, and (iii) a further coating material consisting essentially of a particulate, said further coating material adds bulk, thickness, or any combination thereof, to said coating composition surrounding said grass seed;

said grass seed being a lawn grass seed;

agglomerating said grass seed and said coating composition into a seed product by an agglomeration process, said agglomeration process binds said soil conditioning material and said further coating material onto and surrounding said grass seed; said grass seed is a nucleating agent for said agglomeration process;

said soil conditioning material and said further coating material being in the form of (i) a dry particulate material, ii) a particulate material suspended in a liquid carrier, or iii) any combination thereof, during said agglomeration process;

building up one or more layers of coating composition onto said grass seed;

drying off moisture from said seed product to form an agglomerated seed product, wherein said coating composition is 25% to 99.9% by weight of said agglomerated seed product;

maintaining said coating composition generally disposed about said grass seed until said grass seed germinates;

said coating composition providing water holding properties about said grass seed to enhance the control of said moisture about said grass seed, said grass seed directly benefiting from said moisture held by said soil conditioning material, irrespective of the overall tilth of soil.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said further coating material comprises lime, gypsum, calcium carbonate, or any combination thereof.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said coating composition further comprises i) a fertilizer, ii) a fungicide, iii) a herbicide, or any combination thereof.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said coating composition protects against deleterious effects of weather, animals, pests, the sun, weeds, spore-formers, worms, parasites, insects, larvae, or any combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein said agglomeration process to form said agglomerated seed product occurs in a single agglomeration apparatus.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein said agglomerated seed product provides enhanced growing conditions compared to separate application of each of said soil conditioning material and said grass seed to soil.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein grass seed planting density for a desired plant population density is thereby reduced.

8. The method of claim 3 wherein said coating composition incubates said grass seed and provides a beneficial germination environment by binding to said grass seed to form a self-contained, value added said agglomerated seed product.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said coating composition further comprises a fungicide, wherein said fungicide is a metalaxyl fungicide, Apron®, Subdue®, or any combination thereof.

The method of claim 1 wherein said coating composition further comprises a fertilizer, wherein said fertilizer comprising nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, manganese, copper, boron, iron, zinc, magnesium, chromium, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, superphosphate, triple superphosphate, dicalcium phosphate, organic fertilizer, or any combination thereof.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said fertilizer is applied to said grass seed at a controlled amount within said composition, and at a controlled distance from said grass seed within said coating composition.
