Abstract

A system and method for acquiring a transmitted spread-spectrum signal uses a matched filter configuration that is preferably employed as a Stage 2 filter in the second phase of an initial signal acquisition procedure performed in the receiver. In operation, a Stage 1 filter matches a sequence which is repeated a number of times according to a second sequence within a secondary synchronization sub-channel of the spread-spectrum signal. The Stage 2 filter of the invention then filters the output of the Stage 1 filter in order to recover a secondary synchronization code. The Stage 2 filters the output of the Stage 1 filter using three matched filters of its own. The first and second filters sample different taps of a sequence output from the Stage 1 filter. The third filter samples a predetermined number of taps overlapping taps for the first and second filters in a way that resolves ambiguities with respect to the identification of the sequence. The ambiguity resolution performed by the third filter improves the frequency offset robustness and thus the overall performance of the receiver.

Claims (41)

1. A method for acquiring a transmitted spread-spectrum signal in a spread-spectrum communications system, the method comprising:

(a) locating a sequence within a secondary synchronization sub-channel of a received spread-spectrum signal;

(b) filtering a first set of taps corresponding to the sequence;

(c) filtering a second set of taps corresponding to the sequence;

(d) filtering a predetermined number of taps from the first set of taps and the second set of taps; and

(e) determining an identity of the sequence based on the predetermined number of taps.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a magnitude of a number of taps of the first set of taps;

determining a magnitude of a number of taps of the second set of taps;

determining a magnitude of the predetermined number of taps; and

adding the magnitudes of the numbers of the first and second sets of taps and the predetermined number of taps.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

performing peak detection on the added magnitudes; and

acquiring a secondary synchronization code based on the peak detection.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of taps and the second set of taps include a same number of taps.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first set of taps corresponds to a first half of the taps of the sequence and the second set of taps corresponds to a second half of the taps of the sequence.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined number of taps equals the same number of taps.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined number of taps include a same number of taps derived from the first and second sets of taps.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sequence is a Hadamard sequence.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the spread-spectrum signal is a CDMA signal.

10. A system for acquiring a transmitted spread-spectrum signal, comprising:

a circuit which locates a sequence within a secondary synchronization sub-channel of the transmitted spread-spectrum signal;

a first matched filter which filters a first set of taps corresponding to the sequence;

a second matched filter which filters a second set of taps corresponding to the sequence; and

a third matched filter which filters a predetermined number of taps overlapping taps by the first matched filter and the second matched filter, wherein an output of the third matched filter provides a basis for determining an identity of the sequence.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a plurality of magnitude determining circuits for respectively determining magnitudes of outputs of the number of taps of the first and second matched filters and the output of the third matched filter; and

a summation circuit for adding the magnitudes.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

a peak detection circuit for processing an output of the summation circuit,

wherein peak detection information derived from the peak detection circuit provides a basis for determining a secondary synchronization code of the transmitted spread-spectrum signal.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first set of taps and the second set of taps include a same number of taps.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the first set of taps corresponds to a first half of the taps of the sequence and the second set of taps corresponds to a second half of the taps of the sequence.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the predetermined number of taps equals the same number of taps.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined number of taps includes a same number of taps from the first matched filter and the second matched filter.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sequence is a Hadamard sequence.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the spread-spectrum signal is a CDMA signal.

19. A matched filter for acquiring a transmitted spread-spectrum signal, the signal including a sequence located within a secondary synchronization sub-channel of the signal, the filter comprising:

a first filter portion which filters a first set of taps corresponding to the sequence;

a second filter portion which filters a second set of taps corresponding to the sequence; and

a third filter portion which filters a predetermined number of taps overlapping taps by the first filter portion and the second filter portion, wherein an output of the third filter portion provides a basis for determining an identity of the sequence.
