Abstract

A multi-service platform module ( 102 ) having a storage device ( 220 ) and a controller ( 226 ) coupled to the storage device ( 220 ). A first aggregation element ( 236 ) is coupled to the storage device ( 220 ) and the controller ( 226 ), where the first aggregation element ( 236 ) is coupled to route access to the storage device ( 220 ) between one of a first network ( 104 ) and a first transceiver socket ( 240 ), and where the controller ( 226 ) controls the first aggregation element ( 236 ). A second aggregation element ( 238 ) is coupled to the storage device ( 220 ) and the controller ( 226 ), where the second aggregation element ( 238 ) is coupled to route access to the storage device ( 220 ) between one of a second network ( 106 ) and a second transceiver socket ( 242 ), and where the controller ( 226 ) controls the second aggregation element ( 238 ).

Claims (21)

1. A multi-service platform module, comprising:

a storage device connected within the multi-service platform module;

a controller coupled to the storage device, wherein the controller is connected within the multi-service platform module;

a first aggregation element coupled to the storage device and the controller, wherein the first aggregation element is connected within the multi-service platform module, wherein the first aggregation element is coupled to route access to the storage device from one of a first network and a first transceiver socket, wherein access is routed from the first transceiver socket if the first transceiver socket is populated by an external device, and wherein access is routed from the first network if the transceiver socket is not populated with the external device, wherein the external device is separate from the multi-service platform module and wherein the controller controls the first aggregation element; and

a second aggregation element coupled to the storage device and the controller, wherein the second aggregation element is connected within the multi-service platform module, wherein the second aggregation element is coupled to route access to the storage device from one of a second network and a second transceiver socket, wherein access is routed from the second transceiver socket if the second transceiver socket is populated by the external device, and wherein access is routed from the second network if the transceiver socket is not populated with the external device, wherein the external device is separate from the multi-service platform module, and wherein the controller controls the second aggregation element.

2. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the controller utilizes an intelligent platform management interface standard.

3. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the storage device resides in both the first network and the second network.

4. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is a dual-ported storage element.

5. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is selected from the group consisting of a FibreChannel storage device, an Infiniband storage device and a Serial ATA storage device.

6. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the first network is a high-speed serial data transfer network.

7. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the second network is a high-speed serial data transfer network.

8. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the first network is selected from the group consisting of a FibreChannel network, an Infiniband network and a Serial ATA network.

9. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein the second network is selected from the group consisting of a FibreChannel network, an Infiniband network and a Serial ATA network.

10. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein if the first transceiver socket is populated the controller configures the first aggregation element to inhibit access of the first network to the storage device and allow access of the first transceiver socket to the storage device, and wherein if the first transceiver socket is unpopulated the controller configures the first aggregation element to inhibit access of the first transceiver socket to the storage device and allow access of the first network to the storage device.

11. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein if the second transceiver socket is populated the controller configures the second aggregation element to inhibit access of the second network to the storage device and allow access of the second transceiver socket to the storage device, and wherein if the second transceiver socket is unpopulated the controller configures the second aggregation element to inhibit access of the second transceiver socket to the storage device and allow access of the second network to the storage device.

12. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , further comprising:

a platform controller designed to control a multi-service platform system;

a location interface coupled to the controller, wherein the location interface communicates a location of the multi-service platform module within the multi-service platform system to the platform controller; and

an enclosure services interface coupled to the storage device and the controller, wherein the enclosure services interface communicates an address of the storage device to the platform controller independent of the first network and the second network.

13. The multi-service platform module of claim 12 , wherein the location of the multi-service platform module and the address of the storage device determine a storage device location within the multi-service platform system.

14. The multi-service platform module of claim 1 , wherein at least one other entity from the multi-service platform system can access the storage device via at least one of the first network and the second network.
