Abstract

In a mobile communications system 10 , a message is sent to a mobile terminal 16 which transmits an acknowledgement signal if the message is received. If the system 10 does not detect an acknowledgement signal, it transmits a high margin notification signal to the mobile terminal 16 to notify the terminal that an attempt was made to send the message. When the mobile terminal 16 has received a notification signal and subsequently comes within range of lower margin signals from the system, it sends a registration signal to the system. The system may then retransmit the message to the mobile terminal 16.

Claims (36)

1. A method of registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising the steps of receiving, at the mobile transceiver, a high penetration signal transmitted by the network;

detecting at the mobile transceiver whether a low penetration signal which is transmitted by the network is received at greater than a predetermined signal quality, and,

when said low penetration signal is detected at greater than said predetermined signal quality, transmitting from said mobile transceiver a registration signal such that the registration signal is received by the mobile communications network.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the high penetration signal includes timing information concerning the timing of transmission of the high penetration signal and the registration signal is transmitted with a timing determined according to said timing information.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that the approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.

4. A method as claimed in claim 2 , wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that the approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.

6. A method as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.

8. Apparatus for registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising:

a receiver for receiving signals from the mobile communications network,

means for detecting reception by said receiver of a high penetration signal transmitted by the network;

means for detecting reception by said receiver of a low penetration signal transmitted by the network; and

means for transmitting to the network a registration signal in response to reception of said low penetration signal at greater than a predetermined signal quality subsequent to reception of said high penetration signal, such that the registration signal is received by the network.

9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8 , including means for deriving timing information from said high penetration signal, wherein said means for transmitting said registration signal is arranged to transmit said registration signal with a timing determined according to said timing information.

10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 9 , wherein said receiver is arranged to receive said signals from a satellite and the means for transmitting is arranged to transmit said registration signal to said satellite.

11. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 9 .

12. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8 , wherein said receiver is arranged to receive said signals from a satellite and the means for transmitting is arranged to transmit said registration signal to said satellite.

13. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 12 .

14. A mobile communications terminal including apparatus as claimed in claim 8 .

15. A method of registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising the steps of:

receiving, at the mobile transceiver, a high penetration signal transmitted by the mobile communications network;

detecting whether a low penetration signal, which is transmitted by the mobile communications network received at greater than a predetermined signal quality; and

in response to reception of said high penetration signal, when said low penetration signal is detected to be received at greater than the predetermined signal quality, transmitting, from said mobile receiver, a registration signal such that the registration signal is received by the mobile communications network.

16. A method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the high penetration signal includes timing information concerning the timing of transmission of the high penetration signal and the registration signal is transmitted with a timing determined according to the timing information.

17. A method as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that an approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.

18. A method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the registration signal is transmitted such that an approximate location of the mobile transceiver is derivable from the registration signal by the mobile communications network.

19. A method as claimed in claim 15 , wherein said low penetration signal is transmitted via a satellite and the registration signal is transmitted via said satellite.

20. Apparatus for registering a wireless mobile transceiver with a mobile communications network, comprising:

a receiver for receiving signals from the mobile communications network, the signals including a high penetration signal and a low penetration signal;

a detector for detecting reception by said receiver of the high penetration signal transmitted by the mobile communications network and for detecting reception by said receiver of the low penetration signal transmitted by the mobile communications network; and

a transmitter responsive to reception of the high penetration signal for transmitting to the mobile communications network a registration signal when said low penetration signal is received at greater than a predetermined signal quality, such that the registration signal is received by the mobile communications network.

21. Apparatus as claimed in claim 20 , wherein said receiver is arranged to derive timing information from the high penetration signal, wherein said transmitter is arranged to transmit the registration signal with a timing determined according to the timing information.

22. Apparatus as claimed in claim 21 , wherein said receiver is arranged to receive the signals from a satellite and said transmitter is arranged to transmit the registration signal to said satellite.

23. Apparatus as claimed in claim 20 , wherein said receiver is arranged to receive the signals from a satellite and said transmitter is arranged to transmit the registration signal to said satellite.

24. Apparatus as claimed in claim 20 , wherein said apparatus forms part of a mobile communications terminal.
