Abstract

A valve seal assembly comprising a valve body having one or more peripheral integral seal retention grooves and one or more peripheral elastomeric seals, each seal being cast-in-place in an integral seal retention groove having adhesion-inhibiting surfaces and offset circular serrations of predetermined height on opposing groove walls. Adhesion-inhibiting surfaces reduce or eliminate internal elastomer stress due to curing of cast-in-place elastomeric seals. Serrations on each of the opposing groove walls are offset to accommodate differing stress concentrations in the walls. Opposing groove walls preferably diverge peripherally. Offset serrations result in decreased metal fatigue from impact and bending stress. Offset serrations also improve valve sealing and increase valve service life by maintaining correct seal position on the valve body while minimizing background stress in the seal elastomer. In representative valve applications, serration height is preferably predetermined so that the cured elastomeric seal remains interdigitated with the serrations for greater than half of the predetermined serration height.

Claims (24)

1. A method of making a valve body and seal assembly, the method comprising:

providing a liquid elastomer for casting a seal;

providing a valve body having a longitudinal axis and comprising:

a peripheral seal retention groove spaced apart from said longitudinal axis, said seal retention groove having first and second opposing sides, said opposing sides being separated by a groove width;

an impact area of the valve body for contacting a valve seat, said impact area being proximate to said first opposing side; and

circular serrations on said first and second opposing sides; and

treating said peripheral seal retention groove to render it adhesion-inhibiting for inhibiting adhesion of said elastomer to said groove;

providing a mold for containing said liquid elastomer, said mold comprising a mold shell mated with said valve body, said mold comprising said adhesion-inhibiting peripheral seal retention groove;

pouring said liquid elastomer into said mold;

curing said poured elastomer in said mold; and

removing said mold shell.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said circular serrations are offset.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said liquid elastomer comprises MDI urethane.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said treating step comprises applying oil to said valve body and retaining a thin coating of said oil on said seal retention groove.

5. A valve comprising a valve seal assembly made according to the method of claim 1 and a web seat.

6. A valve comprising a valve seal assembly made according to the method of claim 1 and a full open seat.

7. A valve comprising a valve seal assembly according to claim 4 and a web seat.

8. A valve comprising a valve seal assembly according to claim 4 and a full open seat.

9. A method of securing an elastomeric seal in a valve body peripheral seal retention groove having two opposing walls, the method comprising:

providing circular serrations on said opposing groove walls;

providing a mold comprising the peripheral seal retention groove;

choosing a castable elastomer that will not adhere to said mold;

casting and curing said elastomeric seal in said mold; and

removing said mold from said valve body.
