Abstract

Compositions for enhancing satiety and weight loss in an individual, assays for assessing a tastant for enhancing satiety and weight loss, and methods of using the composition to suppress appetite and enhance weight loss are provided.

Claims (34)

1. A system for promoting weight loss, the system comprising different sets of satiety enhancing compositions, each of the different sets comprising two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers, each of the compositions in each set being in the form of a free-flowing powder or granules that can be sprinkled onto a foodstuff, one of the compositions in each set consisting essentially of a primarily sweet tastant and a carrier, and the other of the two compositions in each set consisting essentially of a primarily salty tastant and a carrier.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the carrier is selected from the group consisting of maltodextrin, dextrin, starch, methylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and lactose.

The system of claim 2 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from the group consisting of almond, anise, carob, cinnamon, cocoa, malt, peanut, pecan, pistachio, peppermint, spearmint, apple, banana, fig, kiwi, orange, peach, raisin, raspberry, and strawberry tastants, and mixtures thereof.

The system of claim 2 wherein the primarily salty tastant is selected from the group consisting of artichoke, asparagus, avocado, basil, broccoli, celery seed, cucumber, fennel, garlic, horseradish, mushroom, mustard, onion, parmesan, pizza, ranch, spinach, taco, white cheese, and yellow cheese tastants and mixtures thereof.

The system of claim 2 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from the group consisting of almond, anise, carob, cinnamon, cocoa, malt, peanut, pecan, pistachio, peppermint, spearmint, apple, banana, fig, kiwi, orange, peach, raisin, raspberry, and strawberry tastants, and mixtures thereof and the primarily salty tastant is selected from the group consisting of artichoke, asparagus, avocado, basil, broccoli, celery seed, cucumber, fennel, garlic, horseradish, mushroom, mustard, onion, parmesan, pizza, ranch, spinach, taco, white cheese, and yellow cheese testants, and mixtures thereof.

The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from the group consisting of almond, anise, carob, cinnamon, cocoa, malt, peanut, pecan, pistachio, peppermint, spearmint, apple, banana, fig, kiwi, orange, peach, raisin, raspberry, and strawberry tastants, and mixtures thereof.

The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily salty tastant is selected from the group consisting of artichoke, asparagus, avocado, basil, broccoli, celery seed, cucumber, fennel, garlic, horseradish, mushroom, mustard, onion, parmesan, pizza, ranch, spinach, taco, white cheese, and yellow cheese tastants, and mixtures thereof.

The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from the group consisting of almond, anise, carob, cinnamon, cocoa, malt, peanut, pecan, pistachio, peppermint, spearmint, apple, banana, fig, kiwi, orange, peach, raisin, raspberry, and strawberry tastants, and mixtures thereof and the primarily salty tastant is selected from the group consisting of artichoke, asparagus, avocado, basil, broccoli, celery seed, cucumber, fennel, garlic, horseradish, mushroom, mustard, onion, parmesan, pizza, ranch, spinach, taco, white cheese, and yellow cheese tastants, and mixtures thereof.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein for one of the sets the primarily sweet tastant is cocoa and the primarily salty tastant is cheddar cheese.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is spearmint and the primarily salty tastant is onion.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is banana and the primarily salty tastant is horseradish.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is strawberry and the primarily salty tastant is ranch.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is raspberry and the primarily salty tastant is taco.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is malt and the primarily salty tastant is parmesan.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein each of the containers has openings for dispensing the compositions.

16. The system of claim 2 wherein each of the containers has openings for dispensing the compositions.

17. The system of claim 8 wherein each of the containers has openings for dispensing the compositions.

The system of claim 1 wherein each of the containers comprising the primarily sweet tastant is labeled “sweet,” each of the containers comprising the primarily salty tastant is labeled “salty,” and the system further comprises instructions to sprinkle the primarily sweet tastant onto primarily sweet foods and to sprinkle the primarily salty tastant onto primarily salty foods.

The system of claim 2 wherein each of the containers comprising the primarily sweet tastant is labeled “sweet,” each of the containers comprising the primarily salty tastant is labeled “salty,” and the system further comprises instructions to sprinkle the primarily sweet tastant onto primarily sweet foods and to sprinkle the primarily salty tastant onto primarily salty foods.

The system of claim 5 wherein each of the containers comprising the primarily sweet tastant is labeled “sweet,” each of the containers comprising the primarily salty tastant is labeled “salty,” and the system further comprises instructions to sprinkle the primarily sweet tastant onto primarily sweet foods and to sprinkle the primarily salty tastant onto primarily salty foods.

The system of claim 1 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers wherein (i) the primarily sweet tastant is a cocoa tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a cheddar cheese tastant for one of the six sets, (ii) the primarily sweet tastant is a spearmint tastant and the primarily salty tastant is an onion tastant for another one of the six sets, (iii) the primarily sweet tastant is a banana tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a horseradish tastant for another one of the six sets, (iv) the primarily sweet tastant is a strawberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a ranch tastant for another one of the six sets, (v) the primarily sweet tastant is a raspberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a taco tastant for another one of the six sets, and (vi) the primarily sweet tastant is a malt tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a parmesan tastant for another one of the six sets.

22. The system of claim 18 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers wherein (i) the primarily sweet tastant is a cocoa tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a cheddar cheese tastant for one of the six sets, (ii) the primarily sweet tastant is a spearmint tastant and the primarily salty tastant is an onion tastant for another one of the six sets, (iii) the primarily sweet tastant is a banana tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a horseradish tastant for another one of the six sets, (iv) the primarily sweet tastant is a strawberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a ranch tastant for another one of the six sets, (v) the primarily sweet tastant is a raspberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a taco tastant for another one of the six sets, and (vi) the primarily sweet tastant is a malt tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a parmesan tastant for another one of the six sets.

23. The system of claim 19 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers wherein (i) the primarily sweet tastant is a cocoa tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a cheddar cheese tastant for one of the six sets, (ii) the primarily sweet tastant is a spearmint tastant and the primarily salty tastant is an onion tastant for another one of the six sets, (iii) the primarily sweet tastant is a banana tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a horseradish tastant for another one of the six sets, (iv) the primarily sweet tastant is a strawberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a ranch tastant for another one of the six sets, (v) the primarily sweet tastant is a raspberry tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a taco tastant for another one of the six sets, and (vi) the primarily sweet tastant is a malt tastant and the primarily salty tastant is a parmesan tastant for another one of the six sets.

24. The system of claim 1 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

25. The system of claim 18 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

26. The system of claim 19 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

27. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant in each set is selected from a group of primarily sweet tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants and the primarily salty tastant is selected from a group of primarily salty tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants.

28. The system of claim 27 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

29. The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant in each set is selected from a group of primarily sweet tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants over a period of at least one month and the primarily salty tastant is selected from a group of primarily salty tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants over a period of at least one month.

30. The system of claim 29 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

The system of claim 1 wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from a group of primarily sweet tastants assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a study in which a test group of adult participants were instructed to apply, for a period of at least one month, compositions comprising primarily sweet tastants onto primarily sweet foods and compositions comprising primarily salty tastants onto primarily salty foods.

32. The system of claim 31 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers.

33. A system for promoting weight loss, the system comprising a set of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers, each of the compositions being in the form of a free-flowing powder or granules that can be sprinkled onto a foodstuff, one of the compositions consisting essentially of a primarily sweet tastant and a carrier, and the other of the two compositions consisting essentially of a primarily salty tastant and a carrier, wherein the primarily sweet tastant is selected from a group of primarily sweet tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants and the primarily salty tastant is selected from a group of primarily salty tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants.

34. The system of claim 33 wherein the system comprises six different sets of two different satiety enhancing compositions packaged in separate containers wherein the primarily sweet tastant in each of the sets is selected from a group of primarily sweet tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants and the primarily salty tastant in each of the sets is selected from a group of primarily salty tastants that have been assayed for effectiveness in effecting weight loss in a test group of adult participants.
