Abstract

An apparatus which couples light to a fiber from a light source at an input plane while reducing back reflections includes returning light reflected back through such that the returning light does not substantially overlap with an output of the light source in the input plane. This apparatus may include a mode matching element and/or an angular distribution altering element. The apparatus may be reciprocal. The reciprocal apparatus may prevent light traversing the apparatus again having a change in phase of light from substantially overlapping an original object in an input plane.

Claims (35)

1. An apparatus comprising a mode matching optical element that receives light from a light source and outputs light having a corkscrew path.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the mode matching optical element is a single optical element having at least two surfaces.

3. An apparatus, comprising a mode matching optical element that couples light from a light source in an input plane into a fiber and reduces coupling of light reflected back to the light source, wherein a change in phase of light reflected from the fiber and passing back through the reciprocal optical element towards the light source prevents light from substantially overlapping an output of the light source in the input plane, the mode-matching element outputting light having a corkscrew path.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein outputting includes focusing.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the mode matching optical element is phase-sensitive.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein light output from the mode matching element is received by an optical waveguide.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the optical waveguide is a multi-mode fiber.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein light in the corkscrew path has a desired angular distribution.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the mode matching element is a diffractive optical element.

10. A system, comprising:

a light source outputting light having a planar wavefront; and

a vortex lens receiving light having the planar wavefront from the light source and outputting light having a corkscrew wave.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the vortex lens is a diffractive optical element.

12. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a target receiving light having the corkscrew wave.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the target is an optical waveguide.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the optical waveguide is a multi-mode fiber.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein a distance between a target and the multi-mode lens is at least approximately three times a beam diameter incident on the target.

16. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a mount substrate for the light source and an optics substrate for the vortex lens.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a spacer between the mount substrate and the optics substrate.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the spacer and the optics substrate enclose the light source.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein at least two of the spacer, the mount substrate and the optics substrate are secured at a wafer level.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the mount substrate and the optics substrate are secured at a wafer level.

21. The system of claim 16 , wherein the optics substrate further splits off a portion of light from the light source.

22. The system of claim 21 , further comprising a detector receiving the portion of light.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the detector is on the mount substrate.

24. The system of claim 21 , wherein optics substrate includes a diffractive optical element splitting off the Portion of light.

25. The system of claim 10 , wherein the vortex lens is a lithograph.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the lithograph is a diffractive optical element.

27. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a reflector directing light from the vortex lens to a target.

28. The system of claim 27 , wherein the reflector is an angled surface adjacent the vortex lens.

29. The system of claim 10 , further comprising an imaging lens.

30. The system of claim 29 , wherein the imaging lens is between the light source and the vortex lens.

31. The system of claim 29 , further comprising an optics substrate having the vortex lens on one surface and an imaging lens on an opposite surface.

32. The system of claim 31 , wherein a thickness of the optics substrate determines a numerical aperture.

33. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein a desired angular distribution is substantially null on axis.
