Methods for fabricating three dimensional anisotropic thin films and products produced thereby
A three dimensional structure comprising at least two materials capable of being deposited by vapor deposition. The structure is fabricated by the controlled vapor deposition of the materials onto a substrate.
1. A method of fabricating a three dimensional anisotropic structure comprising a thin film of at least two different materials, comprising the steps of vapor depositing a quantity of a first one of said at least two different materials onto the surface of a substrate as a non-continuous film, vapor depositing a quantity of a second one of said at least two different materials onto the substrate as a non-continuous film, and sequentially repeating said vapor depositions of a quantity of each one of said at least two different materials onto the substrate until an operator determined amount of each one of said at least two materials has been deposited.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least two different materials are vapor deposited onto the substrate such that said second one of said at least two different materials are deposited in the form of a plurality of columns.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of removing said second one of said at least two different materials from the three dimensional structure, and adding an additional material to voids remaining after said second one of said at least two different materials is removed.
4. A method of forming a coating on a substrate, said coating comprising at least two different materials, comprising the steps of vapor depositing a quantity of a first one of said at least two different materials onto the surface of said substrate, vapor depositing a second quantity of a second one of said at least two different materials onto the surface of said substrate, and sequentially repeating said vapor depositions of a quantity of each one of said at least two different materials onto the surface of said substrate until an operator determined amount of each one of said at least two materials has been deposited onto said substrate.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said at least two different materials are vapor deposited onto the substrate such that said second one of said at least two different materials are deposited in the form of a plurality of columns.
6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the steps of removing said second one of said at least two different materials from the three dimensional structure, and adding an additional material to voids remaining after said second one of said at least two different materials is removed.
7. A method of fabricating a three dimensional structure comprising at least one material capable of being deposited by vapor deposition and a plurality of columns having a user-defined geometry, said method comprising vapor depositing a quantity of said at least one material onto a substrate and vapor depositing a quantity of a second material onto the substrate in order to build a three dimensional structure having said plurality of columns of user-defined geometry comprising said second material.
8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising the step of removing said second material from the three dimensional structure such that said columns become empty.
9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising the step of depositing an additional material within the empty columns after said second material is removed.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said second material is removed by etching.
11. The method of claim 9 , wherein said additional material comprises a material which cannot be applied by vapor deposition.
