Abstract

Devices such as flow through columns, substrates such as spherical polymer beads, and methods of using such to remove prions from any liquid sample are disclosed. A surface of a substrate is coated with a prion complexing agent, such as a salt of phosphotungstic acid. Blood or plasma passing through a column containing beads coated with prion complexing agent are rendered prion free.

Claims (16)

1. A device for removing infectious PrP Sc dimers from a liquid sample, comprising:

a housing through which a liquid sample flows;

substrate surfaces comprised of a heteropoly acid or salt thereof; and

infectious PrP Sc dimers bound to the heteropoly acid or salt thereof.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing is cylindrical.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is comprised of polymer beads having the heteropoly acid or salt thereof coated on their surface.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the heteropoly acid or salt thereof is a phosphoptungstic acid or salt thereof.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the phosphotungstic acid or salt thereof is sodium phosphotungstate.

6. A device for removing infectious PrP Sc dimers from a liquid sample, comprising:

a housing through which a liquid sample flow;

substrate surfaces having thereon a complexing agent which binds infectious PrP Sc dimers; and

infectious PrP Sc dimers bound to the complexing agent.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the complexing agent is comprised of an antibody which binds PrP Sc .

8. The device as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the complexing agent is a heteropoly acid or salt thereof.

9. The device as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the heteropoly acid or salt thereof is a phosphotungstic acid or salt thereof.

10. The device as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the phosphotungstic acid or salt thereof is sodium phosphotungstate.
