Abstract

An apparatus for removing a stator tube from a position about a rotor of a progressing cavity pump is provided. The apparatus includes an actuator assembly having a base and a piston which is longitudinally displaceable relative to the base, and a pusher rod. The base of the actuator assembly is removably attachable to a discharge end of the stator tube. The pusher rod is longitudinally releasably attachable to the piston at a plurality of locations along the length of the pusher rod and is located to engage the rotor when the base is coupled to the stator tube. The pusher rod is coupled to the piston and the piston is driven by the actuator assembly. With only slight modifications the apparatus may also be used to install the stator tube on the rotor when operated in a substantially opposite way.

Claims (27)

1. A pump apparatus comprising:

a progressing cavity pump including a stator tube and a rotor, the rotor being rotatable relative to the stator tube to pump material through the stator tube; and

a stator tube removal apparatus for removing the stator tube from a position about the rotor, the removal apparatus comprising:

an actuator assembly including a base and a piston which is displaceable relative to said base along a first axis, said base being removably attachable to a discharge end of said stator tube; and

a pusher rod located adjacent to said piston and being releasably attachable to said piston along said first axis at a plurality of locations along said pusher rod, said pusher rod being located to engage said rotor when said base is coupled to said stator tube, said pusher rod is coupled to said piston and said piston is driven by said actuator assembly.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said piston is a hollow cylinder and said pusher rod is received in said piston.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said actuator assembly includes a hydraulic cylinder assembly.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said pusher rod includes a plurality of keyholes spaced along a length thereof, and wherein said piston includes at least one keyhole, and wherein the apparatus further includes a pin that can be passed through aligned keyholes of said pusher rod and said piston to couple said pusher rod and said piston for movement along said first axis.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said piston is displaceable relative to said base along said first axis by a stroke length, and wherein each of said keyholes of said pusher rod are spaced apart along said first axis by a distance about equal to said stroke length.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said pusher rod has a dimension along said first axis that is at least greater than a length of said piston.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said base includes a cross bar including a pair of opposed slots which are shaped and located to receive a fastener therethrough to couple said actuator assembly to said stator tube.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising at least one spacer coupled to and protruding generally outwardly from said actuator assembly to space said actuator assembly from said stator tube when said actuator assembly is coupled to said stator tube.

9. A stator removal device for removing a stator tube from its position about a rotor of a progressing cavity pump, comprising:

a hydraulic cylinder assembly that is removably mounted to a discharge end of the stator tube;

a hollow piston that is driven by the hydraulic cylinder assembly, the hollow piston having a keyhole near a distal end for receiving a pin therein, the hydraulic cylinder assembly being located between the distal end of the hollow piston and the stator tube;

a pusher rod received in the hollow piston and being longitudinally repositionable with respect to the hollow piston, the pusher rod having a plurality of keyholes spaced along its length for receiving a pin therein and having a working end for contacting a discharge end of the rotor during a removal operation, the hydraulic cylinder assembly being located between the working end of the pusher rod and the distal end of the hollow piston; and

a pin that is removably positionable in the keyhole of the hollow piston and a selected keyhole of the pusher rod for coupling the hollow piston and the pusher rod together;

wherein a working length of the stator removal device is adjustable by adjusting the longitudinal position of the pusher rod with respect to the hollow piston;

wherein the hydraulic cylinder assembly, when activated, exerts a force on the hollow piston that drives the distal end of the hollow piston toward the hydraulic cylinder assembly and the rotor until the working end of the pusher rod engages the discharge end of the rotor; and

wherein the engagement of the discharge end of the rotor with the working end of the pusher rod causes the hydraulic cylinder assembly and stator tube to move toward the distal end of the hollow piston and away from the rotor.

10. A pump assembly comprising:

a progressing cavity pump including a stator tube having a discharge end, said stator tube having a double lead helical cavity therein, said pump including a single lead helical screw rotor received in said stator tube, the rotor being rotatable relative to said stator tube to pump material through said stator tube; and

an assembly/disassembly apparatus including an actuator assembly having a base and a piston which is displaceable relative to said base along a first axis, said base being removably attached to said discharge end of said stator tube, and a pusher rod located adjacent to said piston and being releasably attachable to said piston at a plurality of locations along said pusher rod for movement along said first axis, said pusher rod including a working end located adjacent to said rotor.

11. An apparatus for removing a stator tube from a position about a rotor of a progressing cavity pump, the rotor being rotatable relative to the stator tube to pump material through the stator tube, the apparatus comprising:

an actuator assembly including a base, which is removably attachable to a discharge end of the stator tube, and a hydraulic cylinder assembly having a piston with a distal end which is displaceable relative to the base along a first axis; and

a pusher rod located adjacent to the piston and being releasably attachable to the piston along the first axis at a plurality of locations along the pusher rod, the pusher rod having a working end for engaging the rotor;

wherein the hydraulic cylinder assembly is located between the distal end of the piston and the working end of the pusher rod when the base is coupled to the stator tube, the pusher rod is coupled to the piston and the piston is driven by the actuator assembly such that the working end of the pusher rod engages the rotor.
