Abstract

A bioengineered synthesis scheme for the production of quinic acid from a carbon source is provided. Methods of producing quinic acid from a carbon source based on the synthesis scheme as well as conversion of quinic acid to hydroquinone are also provided.

Claims (13)

1. A method for the production of 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone from quinic acid, comprising: oxidizing the quinic acid to 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone with an oxidizing agent selected from the group consisting of HOCL, AgNO 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 Ce(NO 3 ) 6 , V 2 O 5 , NH 4 VO 3 , and 2KHSO 5 .KHSO 4 .K 2 SO 4 /NaCl.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is HOCl.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is AgNO 3 .

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is AgNO 3 and K 2 S 2 O 8 is a cooxidant.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is (NH 4 ) 2 Ce(NO 3 ) 6 .

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is V 2 O 5 .

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is NH 4 VO 3 .

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing agent is 2KHSO 5 .KHSO 4 .K 2 SO 4 /NaCl.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the quinic acid is produced by a recombinant microbe.

10. The method of claim 2 , wherein the oxidizing agent is HOCl obtained by acidifying NaOCl.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the oxidizing the quinic acid further comprises reacting the quinic acid with a cooxidant.

12. A method for the production of hydroquinone from 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone, comprising: dehydrating 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone to produce hydroquinone, wherein said 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone is prepared by oxidizing quinic acid to 3,4,5-trihydroxycyclohexanone with an oxidizing agent selected from the group consisting of HOCL, AgNO 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 Ce(NO 3 ) 6 , V 2 O 5 , NH 4 VO 3 , and 2KHSO 5 .KHSO 4 .K 2 SO 4 /NaCl.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the quinic acid is produced by a recombinant microbe.
