Abstract

Deeply scored pharmaceutical tablets are disclosed, along with pharmaceutical tablets with a score in a segment that adjoins a segment lacking a pharmacologically effective dose of any drug.

Claims (7)

1. An immediate release compressed bi-layer pharmaceutical tablet consisting of

a first layer forming at least one active segment containing a drug or drugs, said first layer including a score and having a top surface, wherein said score in said first layer extends at least 70% of the distance from said top surface towards an interface between said first layer and a second layer; and

a second layer forming an inactive segment wherein said second layer does not contain any pharmacologically effective drug or drugs.

A method of breaking a pharmaceutical tablet as defined in claim 1 which comprises breaking said tablet through a score where the distance that said score extends from the top surface of the first layer to said interface is no less than 70% of the distance from the top surface of the first layer to said interface.

3. A method of breaking a pharmaceutical tablet as defined in claim 1 which comprises breaking through said first layer through said score and also breaking through said second layer.

4. A method of providing a partial dose of a drug contained in an immediate release compressed pharmaceutical tablet as defined in claim 1 which comprises breaking said tablet through the score in said first layer to create a tablette and then administering said tablette to a patient in need of treatment thereof.

5. A pharmaceutical tablet as defined in claim 1 in which said drug or drugs is or are pharmacologically effective in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions, psychiatric conditions, diabetes, thyroid disorders, pain or thrombotic disorders.
