Surface treatment with dormant bacteria and adhering agent to control odor
The present invention provides in one aspect for a method for controlling odor associated with spills of organic material which can cause odors on carpets. The method comprises applying to the carpet a preparation of dormant bacteria, which when activated are effective to control odors. The dormant bacterial preparation is allowed to become associated with the carpet, such that when the carpet is exposed to organic material which can cause odors, the bacteria are capable of becoming active and digesting the organic material. The formulation may contain other agents such as odor neutralizing or masking agents, enzymes, foaming or anti-foaming agents.
1. A surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material,
wherein said bacterium is a sporulated form of one or more strains of the genus Bacillus , and
wherein said surface that is being treated is a carpet comprising a carpet fiber, and the dormant bacterium is applied to the carpet at a concentration of between about 10 6 and about 10 8 cells per square inch of said carpet fiber.
2. The surface according to claim 1 , wherein the dormant bacterium is applied to said carpet at a concentration of about 10 7 cells per square inch of said carpet fiber.
3. The surface according to claim 1 , wherein said strains of Bacillus are selected from the group consisting of:

5. A surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material, and
wherein said treated surface further comprises a stain blocker.
6. The surface according to claim 5 , wherein said stain blocker is selected from the group consisting of sulfonated phenol formaldehyde condensate polymer, sulfonated naphthol formaldehyde condensate polymer, and hydrolyzed vinyl aromatic maleic anhydride polymer.
7. The surface according to claim 6 , wherein said surface that is being treated is a carpet comprising a carpet fiber and said carpet is treated with said stain blocker at a treatment rate of about 0.1 wt % to about 20 wt % based upon the weight of said carpet fiber.
8. The surface according to claim 7 , wherein said treatment rate is from about 0.25 wt % to about 2 wt %.
9. The surface according to claim 5 , wherein said adhering agent comprises said stain blocker.
10. A surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent selected from the group consisting of a fluorochemical, a stain blocker, an acrylic polymer, a styrene butadiene rubber, a nitrile rubber and a polyvinyl chloride for adhering said dormant bacterium to a surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material.
11. The surface according to claim 10 , wherein said adhering agent is said fluorochemical.
12. The surface according to claim 10 , wherein said adhering agent is said stain blocker.
13. The surface according to claim 12 , wherein said stain blocker is selected from the group consisting of sulfonated phenol formaldehyde condensate polymer, sulfonated naphthol formaldehyde condensate polymer, and hydrolyzed vinyl aromatic maleic anhydride polymer.
14. The surface according to claim 10 , wherein said adhering agent is said acrylic polymer.
15. A fiber or fabric surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated fiber or fabric surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a fiber or fabric surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material.
16. The surface according to claim 15 , wherein said fiber is a nylon fiber, a polypropylene fiber or a wool fiber.
17. A plastic film surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated plastic film surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a plastic film surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material.
18. A wood surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated wood surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at last one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a wood surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material.
19. A surface treated so as to be capable of controlling odor caused by an organic material, said treated surface comprising:
a dormant bacterium capable of becoming active when exposed to said organic material; and
at least one adhering agent for adhering said dormant bacterium to a surface that is being treated,
wherein said dormant bacterium, when activated, is capable of digesting said organic material, which said treated surface is produced by treating said surface that is being treated with a composition comprising said adhering agent and said dormant bacterium, wherein said adhering agent constitutes between 0.01 wt % and 20 wt % of said composition based upon a total weight of said composition.
20. The surface according to claim 19 , wherein said adhering agent constitutes between 0.1 wt % and 15 wt % of said composition.
21. The surface according to claim 20 , wherein said adhering agent constitutes between 5 wt % and 10 wt % of said composition.
