Watercraft having a four stroke engine with a supercharger
View Patent ↗A personal watercraft is disclosed with a hull, a seating assembly, and a four stroke internal combustion engine below the seating assembly. The engine has at least one intake valve for each of the combustion cylinder chambers, at least one exhaust valve for each of the combustion cylinder chambers, and a valve actuation assembly located in a cylinder head for operating the intake and exhaust valves. At least one air intake passageway is operatively coupled to the combustion cylinder chambers through the intake valves. An air intake manifold is connected to the cylinder head and operatively connected to the at least one air intake passageway. The engine also has a supercharger for boosting air to the air intake manifold. The watercraft also includes a propulsion unit, operatively coupled to the crankshaft, which is located on one end of the two ends of the crankcase.
1. A personal watercraft, comprising:
a hull;
a deck disposed on the hull;
an engine compartment defined between the hull and the deck;
a four stroke internal combustion engine disposed in the engine compartment, the engine comprising:
a crankcase having a top, a bottom, two sides, two ends and a crankshaft rotatably mounted therein between the two ends;
a cylinder head connected to the lop of the crankcase,
the crankcase and the cylinder head forming at least one combustion cylinder chamber therebetween;
at least one intake valve for the at least one combustion cylinder chamber;
at least one exhaust valve for the at least one combustion chamber;
a valve actuation assembly located in the cylinder head for actuating the at least one intake valve and the at least one exhaust valve;
at least one air intake passageway connected to the at least one combustion cylinder;
a propulsion unit operatively coupled to an end of the crankshaft;
at least one air intake manifold operatively connected to the at least one air intake passageway;
an air/water separating device in fluid communication with the air intake manifold for separating water out from the induction air; and
a supercharger for boosting air to the air intake manifold arranged in fluid communication between the air/water separating device and the intake manifold.
2. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , further comprising:
a bow; and
a transom; and
wherein the supercharger is disposed rearwardly of the water separating device towards the transom of the personal watercraft.
3. The personal watercraft of claim 2 , wherein the supercharger is a mechanically driven supercharger.
4. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , further comprising a straddle-type seat on the deck, and wherein the engine is disposed below the seat.
5. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , wherein the water separating device has a body defining a volume, an inlet and an outlet.
6. The personal watercraft of claim 5 , wherein the body of the water separating device is separated in at least two chambers.
7. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , wherein the crankshaft is horizontally disposed.
8. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , wherein the propulsion unit is a jet propulsion unit disposed rearwardly of the engine.
9. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , further comprising an air box in fluid communication with the air intake manifold, and wherein the air/water separating device is disposed within the air box.
10. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , wherein the supercharger is a mechanically driven supercharger.
11. The personal watercraft of claim 1 , further comprising handlebars mounted on the deck for steering the personal watercraft.
