Abstract

The present invention relates to connector tools for seating connectors on a substrate such as a printed circuit board (PCB). The connector tool is a machined structure having a plurality of walls that define intersecting slots that mate with an array of male connector pins and include one or more ribs to reduce damage if the tool is dropped on the floor. The ribbed walls strengthen the connector tool, but do not interfere with the mating array of male connector pins. The connector tool also includes push shoulders to contact the connector apart from the array of male connector pins so as to seat the connector onto the PCB without connector tool and connector damage.

Claims (17)

1. A connector tool for seating a connector having an array of male connector pins onto a substrate, comprising:

a machined block-shaped structure having a lower solid block portion and an upper block portion,

wherein the upper block portion includes a plurality of walls that extend from the lower block portion and are arranged orthogonal to each other and define intersecting slots for mating with the array of male connector pins,

wherein the plurality of walls include one or more ribbed walls that strengthen the plurality of walls without the ribbed walls obstructing the array of male connector pins and include a top surface of the plurality of walls as push shoulders to contact the connector apart from the array of male connector pins so that the connector tool can seat the connector onto the substrate.

2. The connector tool of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ribbed walls are the one or more end walls of the machined block-shaped structure.

3. The connector tool of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ribbed walls are the one or more internal walls of the machined block-shaped structure.

4. The connector tool of claim 1 , wherein each rib of the one or more ribbed walls is parallel to the array of male connector pins when the connector tool seats the connector onto the substrate.

5. The connector tool of claim 1 , wherein each rib of the one or more ribbed walls is located on the inner side and/or on an outer side of the ribbed wall.

6. The connector tool of claim 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , or 5 , wherein the connector tool is machined by Wire Electrode Discharge Machining (WEDM) and the substrate is a printed circuit board.

7. A connector tool for seating a connector having an array of male connector pins onto a substrate, comprising:

a machined block-shaped structure having a lower solid block portion and an upper block portion,

wherein the upper block portion includes a plurality of walls that extend from the lower block portion and are arranged orthogonal to each other and define intersecting slots for mating with the array of male connector pins,

wherein the plurality of walls include one or more ribbed walls that extend from the lower block portion that strengthen the plurality of walls without the ribbed walls obstructing the array of male connector pins and include a top surface of the plurality of walls as push shoulders to contact the connector apart from the array of male connector pins so that the connector tool can seat the connector onto the substrate, wherein each rib of the one or more ribbed walls extends from the top surface to the lower block portion and is parallel to the array of male connector pins when the connector tool seats the connector onto the substrate.

8. The connector tool of claim 7 , wherein the one or more ribbed walls are the one or more end walls of the machined block-shaped structure.

9. The connector tool of claim 7 , wherein the one or more ribbed walls are the one or more internal walls of the machined block-shaped structure.

10. The connector tool of claim 7 , wherein each rib of the one or more ribbed walls is located on the inner side and/or on an outer side of the ribbed wall.

11. The connector tool of claim 7 , 8 , 9 , or 10 , wherein the connector tool is machined by Wire Electrode Discharge Machining (WEDM) and the substrate is a printed circuit board.
