Abstract

A system is provided for positioning separate portions of a sample in elongate, parallel channels of a sample chamber and for irradiating a sample in the chamber to create a diffraction pattern where the sample and chamber differ in refractive index. The system also can measure absorption of electromagnetic radiation by a sample in the chamber, and can measure the absorption simultaneously with measurement of diffraction by the sample.

Claims (11)

1. An article comprising:

a polymeric component having a surface defining a plurality of protrusions and a plurality of intervening indentations, the entire surface defining the protrusions being of material essentially identical to that of the surface defining the indentations, with the protrusions bonded to a surface of a second component in the absence of auxiliary adhesive thereby defining a liquid-impermeable seal therebetween, wherein the liquid-impermeable seal comprises siloxane bonds and wherein the plurality of intervening indentations are not bonded to the surface of the second component.

An article as in claim 1 , wherein first portions of the surface of the polymeric component are bonded to the surface of the second component while a second portion of the surface of the polymeric component, intervening the first portions of the surface of the polymeric component, is free of contact with the surface of the second component.

An article as in claim 1 , wherein first portions of the surface of the second component are bonded to the surface of the polymeric component while a second portion of the surface of the second component, intervening the first portions of the surface of the second component, is free of contact with the surface of the polymeric component.

4. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the surface of the second component is metal.

5. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the polymeric component is transparent or semi-transparent.

6. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the second component is transparent or semi-transparent.

7. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the polymeric component comprises at least one of a silicone polymer, an epoxy polymer, and an acrylate polymer.

8. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the second component comprises a polymer.

9. An article as in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the polymeric component and the second component is elastomeric.

10. An article as in claim 1 , wherein the intervening indentations form a plurality of isolated, essentially parallel, elongate channels.
