Abstract

In one embodiment the invention is a polymerizable composition comprising a) an organoborane amine complex; b) one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization; c) one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization; and d) a catalyst for the polymerization of the one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization. This composition may further comprise a compound which causes the organoborane amine complex to disassociate. In a preferred embodiment, the two part composition further comprises a compound which is reactive with both the b) one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization; and the c) one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization. This composition can be polymerized by contacting the two parts of the composition. In another embodiment the invention is an organoborane amine complex comprising an alkyl borane having ligands which are alkyl, cycloalkyl or both and an amino siloxane.

A polymerized composition comprising one or more polymers derived from one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization, one or more of a second type of polymer derived from one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization and an organoborane.

2. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone further comprises reactive moieties capable of silanol condensation; reactive vinyl moieties; hydride functionality; or hydroxy functionality.

3. The polymerized composition of claim 1 wherein the polymers derived from monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation are covalently linked to the polymers derived from one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone through a compound that reacts with both types of polymers.

4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the polymers form two phases and the compound which reacts with both types of polymers covalently links the two phases.

5. A polymerized composition according to claim 2 wherein the one or more monomers, oligomers, or polymers having a siloxane backbone contains acrylate functional moieties.

6. The polymerized composition according to claim 3 wherein the compound that reacts with bath types of polymers is an acrylate or methacrylate tipped siloxane.

7. The polymerized composition according to claim 1 wherein compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone contain reactive moieties selected from one or more of vinyl moieties, hydrolyzable moieties, hydroxyl moieties, hydride isocyanate moieties, amines or a cyclic siloxane which forms a reactive end group upon ring opening.

8. The polymerized composition according to claim 7 wherein the compounds, oligomers or prepolymers containing siloxane backbone comprises vinyl functionalized siloxanes, hydride functional siloxanes, hydroxyl functional siloxanes, siloxanes having silanol or hydrolyzable groups.

9. The polymerized composition according to claim 1 which further comprises a polyurea phase.

10. The polymerized composition according to claim 9 wherein the siloxane phase is crosslinked to the polyurea phase.

11. The polymerized composition according to claim 4 wherein the compound which reacts with two types of polymers is present in an amount of about 1 to about 20 percent by weight of the polymerized formulation.

12. The polymerizable composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition contains polymers derived from compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone in an amount of about 1 percent to about 90 percent by weight of the polymerized composition.

13. A polymerized composition comprising one or more polymers derived from one or more of monomers, oligomers or polymers having olefinic unsaturation which is capable of polymerization by free radical polymerization, one or more of a second type of polymer derived from one or more compounds, oligomers or prepolymers having a siloxane backbone and reactive moieties capable of polymerization and an organoborane wherein the composition comprises two phases.
