Abstract

A self-contained gimbaled weapon system (GWS) has a shared azimuth axis and two independent elevation axes for a sighting device and a weapon cradle. The GWS allows the weapon cradle to be elevated completely independent of the sighting device. The GWS can be stabilized and operated remotely.

Claims (34)

1. A gimbaled weapon station (GWS), comprising, in combination,

a) a weapon cradle;

b) at least one imaging sighting system;

c) a first azimuth drive that simultaneously allows the sighting system and weapon cradle to move in azimuth direction;

d) a second azimuth drive that allows the sighting system to move independently of the weapon cradle;

e) an elevation drive that moves the weapon cradle in elevation;

f) an operator interface remotely located from the sighting system receiving signals from the sighting system and providing 1) a display for displaying of an imagery captured by the sighting system, 2) operator control over the first and second azimuth drives and the elevation drive, and 3) remote operation of the GWS; and

g) a control unit having a control algorithm that allows coordinated movement of the elevation drive, the first azimuth drive and the second azimuth drive.

2. The GWS of claim 1 further comprising a second elevation drive that allows movement of the sighting system in elevation and can operate independently of the weapon cradle elevation drive.

3. The GWS of claim 1 , further comprising a stabilization system for stabilizing the first azimuth drive, the elevation drive and the weapon cradle.

4. The GWS of claim 1 , further comprising a second operator interface.

5. A gimbaled weapon station (GWS), comprising, in combination,

a) a weapon cradle;

b) at Least one sighting device;

c) a line of sight (LOS) reflector in optical communication with the sighting device;

d) a first azimuth drive that allows simultaneous movement of the sighting device, LOS reflector and weapon cradle in azimuth direction;

e) a second azimuth drive that allows the LOS reflector to move independently of the weapon cradle and sighting device;

f) an elevation drive to move the weapon cradle in elevation; and

g) a control unit having a control algorithm that coordinates movement of the elevation drive, the first azimuth drive and the second azimuth drive.

6. The GWS of claim 5 further comprising a second elevation drive that moves the LOS reflector in elevation and can operate independently of the weapon cradle elevation drive.

7. The GWS of claim 5 , further comprising:

h) an operator interface remotely located from the sighting system receiving signals from the sighting system and providing 1) a display for displaying imagery captured by the sighting system, 2) operator control over the first and second azimuth drives and the elevation drive, and 3) remote operation of the GWS.

8. The GWS of claim 7 , further comprising a second operator interface.

9. The GWS of claim 5 , further comprising a stabilization system for stabilizing the first azimuth drive, the elevation drive and the weapon cradle.

10. A gimbaled weapon station (GWS), comprising, in combination,

a) a weapon cradle;

b) at least one sighting device;

c) a line of sight (LOS) reflector in optical communication with the sighting device;

d) an azimuth drive that moves the sighting device, the LOS reflector and the weapon cradle in azimuth direction;

e) an elevation drive to move the weapon cradle in elevation; and

f) a control unit having a control algorithm that coordinates movement of the elevation drive and the azimuth drive.

11. The GWS of claim 10 further comprising a second elevation drive that moves the LOS reflector in elevation and can operate independently of the weapon cradle elevation drive.

12. The GWS of claim 10 , further comprising: an operator interface remotely located from the sighting system receiving signals from the sighting system and providing 1) a display for displaying imagery captured by the sighting system, 2) operator control over the azimuth drive and the elevation drive, and 3) providing remote operation of the GWS.

13. The GWS of claim 10 , further comprising a stabilization system for stabilizing the azimuth drive, the elevation drive and the weapon cradle.
