Abstract

A network including an optical sensing device, and a registration server, wherein a secret key and a unique public identifier are installed in the optical sensing device and in a database of the registration server; wherein the optical sensing device is adapted to communicate with the registration server; wherein, the registration server is adapted to authenticate the optical sensing device when the optical sensing device is connected to the network by verifying the optical sensing device's encryption, using the secret key, of a challenge message; wherein, if the authentication succeeds, the optical sensing device is registered in the database of the registration server; wherein the optical sensing device is adapted to capture a sequence of time-stamped positions of the optical sensing device relative to a surface including coded data.

Claims (27)

1. A network including: a handheld optical sensing device for sensing coded data printed on a surface, and a registration server, the network characterized by:

a secret key and a unique public identifier being installed in the sensing device and in a database of the registration server;

the sensing device configured to communicate with the registration server;

the registration server is configured to authenticate the sensing device when the sensing device is connected to the network by verifying an encryption from the sensing device, using the secret key, of a challenge message;

upon successful authentication, the sensing device being registered in the database of the registration server;

the registration server is configured to generate a session key, to encrypt the session key using the secret key, and to transmit the encrypted session key to the sensing device, and the sensing device is configured to store the session key;

the sensing device, when placed in an operative position relative to the surface, configured to capture at least one stroke, by at least partially sensing the coded data, relative to the surface and transmit digital ink comprising said at least one stroke to a computer system,

wherein said digital ink is encrypted using said session key, and each stroke comprises interaction data indicative of a page identity and a sequence of time-stamped positions of the sensing device relative to the surface.

2. The network according to claim 1 , wherein the sensing device is configured to transmit to the registration server, a registration request including the sensing device's unique public identifier, the network further characterised by:

the registration server configured to generate the challenge message in response to receipt of the registration request and to transmit the challenge message to the sensing device;

the sensing device configured to encrypt the challenge message using the secret key stored in the sensing device and to transmit the encrypted challenge message to the registration server via a printer; and,

the registration server configured to decrypt the encrypted challenge message using the secret key stored at the registration server and to authenticate the sensing device by comparing the decrypted challenge message with the generated challenge message.

3. The network according to claim 1 , the network further characterised by:

the sensing device configured to transmit a registration request to a printer, the request including the sensing device's unique public identifier;

the printer configured to generate the challenge message and to transmit the generated challenge message to the sensing device;

the sensing device configured to encrypt the challenge message using the secret key stored in the sensing device and to transmit the encrypted challenge message to the printer;

the printer configured to transmit the unique public identifier of the sensing device and the encrypted challenge message to the registration server;

the registration server configured to decrypt the encrypted challenge message using the secret key stored at the registration server and to authenticate the sensing device by comparing the decrypted challenge message with the generated challenge message.

4. The network according to claim 3 , wherein the registration server is configured to generate a session key, to encrypt the session key using the secret key, and to transmit the encrypted session key to the printer;

the printer configured to store the encrypted session key and to transmit the encrypted session key to the sensing device; and

the sensing device configured to decrypt the encrypted session key and to store the decrypted session key.

5. The network according to claim 4 , wherein the printer stores, in non-volatile memory, at least one session key associated with the sensing device, the session key being retrievable via a unique public identifier of the sensing device.

6. The network according to claim 4 , wherein the sensing device stores, in non-volatile memory, at least one session key associated with the printer, the session key being retrievable via a unique public identifier of the printer.

7. The network according to claim 3 , wherein the sensing device communicates with the printer via a wireless connection.

8. The network according to claim 7 , wherein the sensing device connects to the printer when the sensing device comes within wireless communications range of the printer.

9. The network according to claim 4 , wherein the printer prints a first document in response to an input received from the sensing device.

10. The network according to claim 9 , where the sensing device generates the input by sensing coded data on the surface.
