Abstract

A patient interface is disclosed which is comfortable for the user to wear and includes at least in part a moisture permeable or breathable area in the body of the patient interface. In another embodiment the patient interface is a strapless mask that is moulded to fit the contours of a user's face and maximise the mask-to-skin seal. An adhesive material is bonded to the mask cushion and is stamped in place to form substantially the same shape as the cushion such that it fits the facial contours of the user.

Claims (27)

1. A patient interface adapted for connection to a humidification system for delivering a supply of gases to a user, said patient interface in use in fluid communication with said humidification system to provide a substantially sealed flow path for said supply of gases to the user, said patient interface comprising:

a rigid body having at least one cut-out area,

a sealing member configured to in use rest against a face of the user,

said at least one cut-out area covered with a moisture permeable film formed of hydrophilic polyester block copolymer or perfluorosulfonate ionomer membrane, whereby said moisture permeable film alleviates a build up of water condensation within said rigid body.

2. A patient interface as claimed in claim 1 wherein said rigid body comprises an inner surface and said moisture permeable film is attached to said inner surface of said rigid body.

3. A patient interface as claimed in claim 2 wherein each said cut-out area is a slot cut-out of said rigid body.

4. A patient interface as claimed in claim 3 wherein each said slot and said rigid body are covered by said moisture permeable film.

5. A patient interface as claimed in claim 4 wherein said rigid body includes a rigid mesh attached to said inner surface thereof.

6. A patient interface as claimed in claim 5 wherein said rigid mesh has an inner surface and said moisture permeable film is attached to said inner surface of said rigid mesh.

7. A patient interface as claimed in claim 6 , further including headgear adapted to hold said patient interface in position on a head of the user.

8. A patient interface according to claim 7 further including at least one sliding member mounted on said rigid body in use and adapted to connect said headgear to said patient interface when the user is using said patient interface.

9. A patient interface as claimed in claim 6 including an adhesive member stamped to said sealing member, said adhesive member adapted to hold said patient interface in position on the face of the user during treatment.

10. A user interface comprising:

a hollow body comprising a front surface and an inlet positioned in the front surface, the inlet being configured for connection to an inspiratory conduit, the hollow body comprising a cushion that is configured to rest against a skin surface of a user and to seal against the skin surface;

the hollow body comprising at least one opening;

a moisture permeable film, wherein the moisture permeable film comprises a membrane that allows water vapour to pass through it but not air, covering the at least one opening in order to reduce the formation of water droplets inside of the hollow body during prolonged humidification treatment; and

headgear connected to the hollow body such that the headgear can secure the hollow body to the face of the user.

The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the at least one opening comprises a plurality of openings that are formed such that the hollow body defines a framework having an outer circumferential surface, a vertical member extending from an apex of the outer circumferential surface to an apex of the inlet, an upper horizontal cross member and a lower horizontal cross member.

12. The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein a rigid mesh structure is bonded to the vertical and horizontal members and to the outer circumferential surface and the moisture permeable film is bonded to an underside of the rigid mesh structure.

13. The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the at least one opening comprises a plurality of openings that are formed as slots of equal dimension equidistant in the vertical direction about the mid-line of the front surface.

14. The user interface as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the openings are formed in a herring bone configuration.

15. The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the moisture permeable film underlies the at least one opening.

16. The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the moisture permeable film comprises a membrane that allows water vapour to pass through it but not condensed water.

17. The user interface as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the moisture permeable film comprises a hydrophilic polyester block copolymer or a perfluorosulfonate ionomer membrane.

18. The user interface as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the moisture permeable film is air impermeable.

19. A user interface comprising a hollow body, the hollow body being configured to encircle at least one of the nose and the mouth, the hollow body comprising a front surface and an inlet, the inlet being configured for connection to an inspiratory conduit, the hollow body comprising a cushion that is configured to rest against a skin surface of a user and to seal against the skin surface and the hollow body comprising means for allowing water vapour to pass through while not allowing the transmission of air.

20. The user interface as claimed in claim 19 , wherein the means for allowing water vapour to pass through while not allowing the transmission of air comprises at least one cut-out area and a moisture permeable but air impermeable film covering said at least one cut-out area.
