Abstract

A system, method and computer program product to assist in managing the physical plant mechanisms and market finances for a deregulated electricity grid or regulated utility grid, populated with solar electric generation capacity. This system provides tools to assist grid operators in the scheduling and dispatch of generation resources in an electrical grid populated with solar electric generation capacity, a week in advance, on an hourly basis. It also provides tools to assist companies engaged in generation, distribution and energy marketing, in the electrical power industry, to manage their contractual supply obligations in the day-ahead hourly wholesale market and the spot market, in an electrical grid populated with solar electric generation capacity. This process can also be used to predict solar loading of building structures, using forecast irradiance data as inputs to common building energy modeling programs, a week in advance, on an hourly basis.

Claims (33)

1. A method of forecasting solar energy production in a region, comprising:

collecting forecast meteorological data for a given area of the region;

estimating irradiance levels using parameters collected from the forecast meteorological data; and

simulating solar energy production using the collected forecast meteorological data, estimated irradiance levels, and physical characteristics of at least one solar energy generating system in the given area of the region.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forecasting an energy demand for a solar energy generator.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising determining a net electrical energy from the simulated solar energy production and the forecasted energy demand.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising aggregating the simulating solar energy production for each solar energy generating system distributed over the region to produce a total solar energy production for the region.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising determining a net electrical energy from the aggregated solar energy production and a forecasted energy demand for facilities in the region.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining an incident solar power of a target surface using the collected forecast meteorological data, estimated irradiance levels and physical characteristics of the target surface.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the physical characteristics of the target surface include surface size, orientation angles, shading obstructions, latitude, longitude, and elevation.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the parameters include global horizontal irradiance, diffuse horizontal irradiance, and direct normal irradiance.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forecast meteorological data is collected on a week-ahead hourly basis.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the physical characteristics of the solar energy generating system include system size, orientation angles, equipment types, electrical characteristics, shading obstructions, latitude, longitude, and elevation.

11. A system of forecasting solar energy production in a region, comprising:

a processor configured to execute:

a weather module for collecting forecast meteorological data for a given area of the region;

a solar irradiance module for estimating irradiance levels using parameters collected from the weather module;

a physical characteristics module of a solar energy generating system in the given area of the region; and

a simulation module for simulating solar energy production using the collected forecast meteorological data, estimated irradiance levels, and physical characteristics of the solar energy generating system.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising an energy demand module for forecasting an energy demand for a facility.

13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a determination module for determining a net electrical energy from the simulated solar energy production and the forecasted energy demand.

14. The system of claim 11 , further comprising an aggregation module for aggregating the simulating solar energy production for each solar energy generating system distributed over the region to produce a total solar energy production for the region.

15. The system of claim 14 , further comprising a net determination module for determining a net electrical energy from the aggregated solar energy production and a forecasted energy demand for supply facilities for the region.

16. The system of claim 11 , further comprising an incident solar power module for determining an incident solar power of a target surface using the collected forecast meteorological data, estimated irradiance levels and physical characteristics of the target surface.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the physical characteristics of the target surface include surface size, orientation angles, shading obstructions, latitude, longitude, and elevation.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the parameters include global horizontal irradiance, diffuse horizontal irradiance, and direct normal irradiance.
