Abstract

An apparatus and method for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure. The tubular member is anchored to the preexisting structure and an expansion member is pulled through the tubular member to radially expand the tubular member.

Claims (80)

1. A method of coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

placing the tubular member, an expansion device, and a resilient anchor within the preexisting structure;

releasing the resilient anchor to anchor the tubular member to the preexisting structure, releasing the resilient anchor to anchor the tubular member to the preexisting structure comprising releasing elastic energy stored within the resilient anchor; and

displacing the expansion device relative to the tubular member.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resilient anchor comprises:

one or more resilient radially oriented elements.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resilient anchor is adapted to mate with the expansion device.

4. A method of coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

placing the tubular member, an expansion device, and a resilient anchor within the preexisting structure;

releasing the resilient anchor to anchor the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

displacing the expansion device relative to the tubular member,

wherein the resilient anchor comprises:

a resilient scroll.

5. A method of coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

placing the tubular member, an expansion device, and a resilient anchor within the preexisting structure;

releasing the resilient anchor to anchor the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

displacing the expansion device relative to the tubular member,

wherein the resilient anchor comprises:

one or more resilient arms.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a longitudinal direction.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a circumferential direction.

8. An apparatus for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

a tubular member;

a resilient anchoring device storing elastic energy which may be selectively released to cause the resilient anchoring device to couple the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

an expansion device movably coupled to the tubular member and adapted to radially expand the tubular member.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the resilient anchor comprises:

one or more resilient radially oriented elements.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the resilient anchor is adapted to mate with the expansion device.

11. An apparatus for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

a tubular member:

a resilient anchoring device adapted to couple the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

an expansion device movably coupled to the tubular member and adapted to radially expand the tubular member,

wherein the resilient anchor comprises:

a resilient scroll.

12. An apparatus for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

a tubular member:

a resilient anchoring device adapted to couple the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

an expansion device movably coupled to the tubular member and adapted

to radially expand the tubular member,

wherein the resilient anchoring device comprises:

one or more resilient arms.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a longitudinal direction.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a circumferential direction.

15. A tubular member, comprising:

a tubular member body;

one or more resilient anchor elements coupled to the tubular member body and releasably storing elastic energy; and

a release member coupled to the resilient anchor elements and adapted to controllably release the resilient anchor elements and the elastic energy stored therein.

16. The tubular member of claim 15 , wherein the resilient

anchor elements comprise:

one or more resilient arms.

17. The tubular member of claim 16 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a longitudinal direction.

18. The tubular member of claim 16 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a circumferential direction.

19. The tubular member of claim 15 , wherein the resilient anchor elements comprise:

one or more resilient radially oriented elements.

20. The tubular member of claim 15 , wherein the resilient anchor elements are adapted to mate with an expansion device.

21. A tubular member, comprising:

a tubular member body;

one or more resilient elements coupled to the tubular member body; and

a release member releasably coupled to the resilient elements adapted to controllably release the resilient elements,

wherein the resilient elements comprise:

resilient scrolls.

22. A system for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

means for placing the expandable tubular member and an expansion device within the preexisting structure;

means for axially displacing the expansion device within the tubular member;

resilient means having elastic energy stored therein and releasable therefrom to cause the resilient means to anchor the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

means for selectively releasing the stored elastic energy from the resilient means.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the resilient means comprises:

one or more resilient arms.

24. The system of claim 23 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a longitudinal direction.

25. The system of claim 23 , wherein one or more of the resilient arms are oriented in a circumferential direction.

26. The system of claim 22 , wherein the resilient means comprises:

one or more resilient radially oriented elements.

27. The system of claim 22 , wherein the resilient means is adapted to mate with the expansion device.

28. A system for coupling a tubular member to a preexisting structure, comprising:

means for placing the expandable tubular member and an expansion device within the preexisting structure;

means for axially displacing the expansion device within the tubular member;

resilient means for anchoring the tubular member to the preexisting structure; and

means for releasing the resilient means,

wherein the resilient means comprises:

a resilient scroll.
