Abstract

The present invention provides antiviral compositions that comprise one or more of an ionic multivalent metal component, a cationic polymer, and a cationic surfactant. The present invention also provides methods for making and using such antiviral compositions.

Claims (12)

1. An antiviral composition comprising an ionic multivalent metal component, a cationic polymer, a cationic surfactant, a preservative, and water, wherein the ionic multivalent metal component is zinc chloride in a concentration of 0.1% by weight the cationic polymer is chitosan in a concentration of 1.5% by weight, the cationic surfactant is benzalkonium chloride in a concentration of 0.002% by weight, and the preservative is disodium edetate in a concentration of 0.1% by weight.

2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the composition is formulated for local administration.

3. A kit for ameliorating viral infection comprising the composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is contained in a container or an applicator.

4. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the composition is formulated as a nasal spray.

5. The composition according to claim 2 , wherein the composition is formulated as an ointment, a solution, a paste, a gel, a suspension, a lotion, a cream, an aerosol, a dressing, a bandage or a lacquer.

6. The composition according to claim 1 , wherein the composition is effective in ameliorating an infection caused by influenza virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, coronovirus, respiratory syncytical virus, or herpes virus.

7. An antiviral composition comprising an ionic multivalent metal component, a cationic polymer, a cationic surfactant, a preservative, and water, wherein the ionic multivalent metal component is zinc chloride in a concentration of 0.1% by weight the cationic polymer is chitosan in a concentration of 1.5% by weight, the cationic surfactant is benzalkonium chloride in a concentration of 0.002% by weight, and the preservative is disodium edetate in a concentration of 0.1% by weight, wherein the above composition is diluted 20 times prior to treatment.

8. The composition of claim 7 , further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the composition is formulated for local administration.

9. A kit for ameliorating viral infection comprising the composition according to claim 7 , wherein the composition is contained in a container or an applicator.

10. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the composition is formulated as a nasal spray.

11. The composition according to claim 8 , wherein the composition is formulated as an ointment, a solution, a paste, a gel, a suspension, a lotion, a cream, an aerosol, a dressing, a bandage or a lacquer.

12. The composition according to claim 7 , wherein the composition is effective in ameliorating an infection caused by influenza virus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza virus, coronovirus, respiratory syncytical virus, or herpes virus.
