Abstract

A connector for a wave attenuation system formed by connecting a plurality of panels in a structure positioned in a body of water; the system causes the dissipation of wave energy. Different configurations of panel, having different flow characteristics, used in the structure, and different types of connector used to connect panels, create different patterns of water flow within the structure, and contribute to wave energy dissipation. Units deployed in harbors, rivers, marinas and the like, help to prevent beach erosion and can facilitate beach nourishment. Embodiments can be utilized as a security barrier, preventing intrusion by trespassers, divers or various sized boats. A variety of sensors can be mounted to the structures, enabling detection of movement, chemical and biological agents, explosives or radiation. A submersible gate, comprising panels and a buoyancy control mechanism, allows for passage of boats and can be controlled remotely.

Claims (45)

1. A connector for connecting a row comprising a plurality of modules for dissipating energy of a wave, the connector comprising:

a first pair of arcuate struts comprising a first arcuate strut and a second arcuate strut, wherein

each of the arcuate struts has a first end and a second end;

the first end has a connecting portion for connecting the arcuate strut with the row;

the second end has a lock portion for connecting the pair of arcuate struts to each other and

a hub configured to hold the first pair of arcuate struts by receiving the lock portions of the first pair of arcuate struts.

2. The connecter of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second pair of the arcuate struts, wherein

the hub is further configured to hold the second pair of the arcuate struts by receiving the lock portions of the second pair of arcuate struts on an opposite side of the first pair of arcuate struts.

3. The connector of claim 1 , wherein

the locking portion of the first arcuate strut includes a prong, and

the locking portion of the second arcuate strut includes an opening into which the prong of the first arcuate strut is received.

4. The connector of claim 1 , wherein

the arcuate struts composes a plastic resin so that the connector reduces the force exerted upon the row.

5. The connector of claim 1 , wherein

the hub comprises a hub opening configured to receive a piling.

6. The connector of claim 5 , wherein

the hub further comprises a pair of hub members, each of which has a hub opening, and

the pair of hub members are configured to be connected each other to hold the lock portions of the pair of arcuate struts.

7. The connector of claim 6 , wherein

each of the pair of hub members has an arcuate end for receiving the lock portions of the pair of arcuate struts.

8. The connector of claim 7 , wherein

the arcuate end of one of the pair of hub members has a prong and the arcuate end of another one of the pair of hub members has an opening for receiving the prong of the arcuate end of the one of the pair of hub members.

9. The connector of claim 5 , wherein

the hub further comprises bearings and a bearing retaining means for retaining the bearings around the opening.

10. The connector of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of modules comprises:

a front surface including a first portion and a second portion;

a rear surface oppositely located with respect to the front surface;

a plurality of passageways formed in the first portion of the front surface, each of the passageways having an inlet in the front surface to receive the wave and an outlet in the rear surface to discharge the wave from the module, each of the passageways being tapered inwardly in the direction from the inlet to the outlets, such that the wave passing through the passageways is substantially dissipated after being discharged from the outlets; and

concentric grooves formed in the second portion of the front surface.

11. The connector of claim 1 , wherein

the lock portions of the struts are integral with each other.

12. A method for connecting a row comprising a plurality of modules for dissipating energy of a wave, the connector comprising:

providing a pair of arcuate struts and a hub, wherein

each of the arcuate struts has a first end and a second end;

the first end has a connecting portion for connecting the arcuate strut with the row;

the second end has a lock portion for connecting the pair of arcuate struts to each other;

holding the pair of arcuate struts at the lock portion by receiving the hub; and

connecting the connecting portion with the row.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein

each of the plurality of modules comprises:

a front surface including a first portion and a second portion;

a rear surface oppositely located with respect to the front surface;

a plurality of passageways formed in the first portion of the front surface, each of the passageways having an inlet in the front surface to receive the wave and an outlet in the rear surface to discharge the wave from the module, each of the passageways being tapered inwardly in the direction from the inlet to the outlets, such that the wave passing through the passageways is substantially dissipated after being discharged from the outlets; and

concentric grooves formed in the second portion of the front surface.
