Abstract

A system and a method for providing offline web application, page, and form access in a networked or Internet environment. In accordance with one embodiment an Offline Access Server offline Web infrastructure based on a scalable, polite communication technology. The Offline Access Server uses an offline enabling technology, and an HTML extension such as OTML (Offline Tagging Markup Language), to enable any set of web application, application data, page, or form to operate and to be usable offline.

Claims (42)

1. A method for providing offline access to application content in a networked or Internet environment, comprising the steps of:

accessing a web-based application at a web page or portal on behalf of a user;

navigating an online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user;

acquiring application content from the web-based application to create an acquired content, including reading markup tags in the web-based application that specify which portions of the web-based application are to be made available offline:

packaging the acquired content for use offline, including replacing links in the portions to be made available offline, with offline-specific links, as specified by the markup tags, to create an offline version that substantially emulates the appearance of the online version;

sending the offline version of the application content to the client for offline access;

allowing the user of the client to read and update the offline version of the application content while offline, and to then upload the updates the user has made to the application content after going back online;

receiving the updates, and converting the updates to match the online version of the web-based application; and,

submitting the updates to the application content to the web-based application, including unloading the updates made to the offline-specific links with the corresponding links in the web-based application, on behalf of the user, as if the user was online.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the steps of acquiring a response from the web-based application or portal and sending it to the user for offline viewing by the user.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein, when a form is sent to the client, the user fills in the offline version of the application, application data, or form, which is automatically or manually submitted to the web page or portal when the user connects to the network.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of navigating an online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user includes establishing a trust relationship between the system and a server hosting the web application.

The method of claim 1 wherein during content acquisition, content is acquired from the web-based application only once, on behalf of a first user who references the content, and subsequently the system stores the acquired content as a shared copy, and allows subsequent users to access the shared copy of the corresponding package, manipulate it offline, and upload any updates the subsequent users have made to the application content, without having to again acquire the content from the web-based application.

The method of claim 1 wherein the web-based application is a web page, and wherein the application content comprises hypertext markup language links to online content, and wherein during the steps of acquiring and packaging, the markup tags are parsed to modify some of the hypertext markup language links so that when the web page is accessed offline, the client interprets the modified links as pointing to files that are stored locally on the client instead of pointing to the original online content.

7. A system that provides offline access to application content in a networked or Internet environment, comprising a server, in communication with an online web page or portal, and with a client, wherein the server performs the steps of:

accessing a web-based application at a web page or portal on behalf of a user;

navigating an online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user;

acquiring application content from the web-based application to create an acquired content, including reading markup tags in the web-based application that specify which portions of the web-based application are to be made available offline;

packaging the acquired content for use offline, including replacing links in the portions to be made available offline, with offline-specific links, as specified by the markup tags, to create an offline version that substantially emulates the appearance of the online version;

sending the offline version of the application content to the client for offline access;

allowing the user of the client to read and update the offline version of the application content while offline, and to then upload the updates the user has made to the application content after going back online;

receiving the updates, and converting the updates to match the online version of the web-based application; and,

submitting the updates to the application content to the web-based application, including uploading the updates made to the offline-specific links with the corresponding links in the web-based application, on behalf of the user, as if the user was online.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the server performs the additional steps of acquiring a response from the web-based application or portal and sending it to the user for offline viewing by the user.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein, when a form is sent to the client the user fills in the offline version of the form, which is automatically or manually submitted to the web page or portal when the user connects to the network.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the step of navigating en online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user includes establishing a trust relationship between the system and a server hosting the web application.

The system of claim 1 wherein during content acquisition, content is acquired from the web-based application only once, on behalf of a first user who references the content, and subsequently the system stores the acquired content as a shared copy, and allows subsequent users to access the shared copy of the corresponding package, manipulate it offline, and upload any updates the subsequent users have made to the application content, without having to again acquire the content from the web-based application.

The system of claim 1 wherein the web-based application is a web page, and wherein the application content comprises hypertext markup language links to online content, and wherein during the steps of acquiring and packaging, the markup tags are parsed to modify some of the hypertext markup language links so that when the web page is accessed offline, the client interprets the modified links as pointing to files that are stored locally on the client instead of pointing to the original online content.

13. A computer readable medium including instructions stored thereon which when executed by the computer cause the computer to perform the steps of:

accessing a web-based application at a web page or portal on behalf of a user;

navigating an online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user;

acquiring application content from the web-based application to create an acquired content, including reading markup tags in the web-based application that specify which portions of the web-based application are to be made available offline;

packaging the acquired content for use offline, including replacing links in the portions to be made available offline, with offline-specific links, as specified by the markup tags, to create an offline version that substantially emulates the appearance of the online version;

sending the offline version of the application content to the client for offline access;

allowing the user of the client to read and update the offline version of the application content while offline, and to then upload the updates the user has made to the application content after going back online;

receiving the updates, and converting the updates to match the online version of the web-based application; and,

submitting the updates to the application content to the web-based application, including uploading the updates made to the offline-specific links with the corresponding links in the web-based application, on behalf of the user, as if the user was online.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 13 further comprising the steps of acquiring a response from the web-based application or portal and sending it to the user for offline viewing by the user.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein, when a form is sent to the client, the user fills in the offline version of the application, application data, or form, which is automatically or manually submitted to the web page or portal when the user connects to the network.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein the step of navigating an online version of the web-based application in accordance with any configuration information defined for the user includes establishing a trust relationship between the system and a server hosting the web application.

The computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein during content acquisition, content is acquired from the web-based application only once, on behalf of a first user who references the content, and subsequently the system stores the acquired content as a shared copy, and allows subsequent users to access the shared copy of the corresponding package, manipulate it offline, and upload any updates the subsequent users have made to the application content, without having to again acquire the content from the web-based application.

The computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein the web-based application is a web page, and wherein the application content comprises hypertext markup language links to online content, and wherein during the steps of acquiring and packaging, the markup tags are parsed to modify same of the hypertext markup language links so that when the web page is accessed offline, the client interprets the modified links as pointing to files that are stored locally on the client instead of pointing to the original online content.
